sary I am confident my son will be fine because he has me and I will make sure that he is:D he just comes across as a teenager that is lazy can't be bothered, life is too much hassle, why do I have to get a job anyway?:rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: He has such confusing choices, it will click in and he will know, I reckon he would be a fab p.e teacher or exercise/gym/ private trainer (he says no:rolleyes:) he loves his sports with a passion and has the ability to teach others what the best tecniques etc are so he would be fab, if he went into the private personal side of it he would get much more and make a mint:D0

yes thanks I am:D just willing away time before I have to go and see the teacher of the youngest , they are going to run some tests on him to see if he is dyslexic or why he cannot read and write to his abilities, the test were supposed to be in Jan and still nothing has happened:rolleyes:0 -
What is my gift then?
sary I have done child minding also but not as it were legally, I used to specialize in over night stays £20 a night which was reasonable and people like me were hard to come by so the lady paid and often used me, since then moved, long time ago but just remembered I used to do that, NYE was a good one for the money, like I said before done loads of this and that and have brought money into the house and food on the table but never enough for it to be considered a decent weekly safe, reliable, healthy, wage
Well, there's the rub. What, these days is safe, reliable and healthy, wage-wise? My BF was facing a £6k pay cut last month. He's lost all his commision, but his basic, he's been told, should go up £3k. He's still £3k down, and nothing is concrete. Being in work is no guarantee to stay in work, or to stay earning a set income.
Perhaps the fact that your experience is multi-faceted, means you are so adaptable, that you can switch trades and services to accommodate a recession better than others? You have to have some confidence to face a bunch of 18-30 holidaymakers, so you must be more than capable of doing good sales. It may be worthwhile just putting your CV into a lot of the local retailers, registering with local employment agencies. Perhaps you'll get some temping work that way? We often employed temps as permanent staff, having witnessed their good work, and suitability for our workplace.
I noticed a cake stall, and a plant stall at the local car boot did a good trade. Can you batch bake in readiness for one, or do you have green fingers, and able to sell plants at the top of your drive, like some do? Babysitting can be done informally, and you could advertise locally, but without a formal childcare qualification, or suitable alternative experience (say nursing, nanny, etc) you can't register on a babysitting website. Silly if you're a mother already I think, but it's there for the children's protection. A babysitter can be really hard to find, and an overnight one is even harder, so you have a real service to offer there. You can even apply for your own CRB check, but it does cost a fee.
Focus on what you CAN do, not what you can't. Hmmm, I should really take my own advice sometimes!:oOne day the clocks will stop, and time won't mean a thing
Be nice to your children, they'll choose your care home0 -
True:D I looked into dog walking but can't allow the dog to pull with the arthrits and can't guarantee that day will be a walkable day for me so did not go ahead with that idea:D
We have done many boot fairs with bits and pieces and made money that way but never specialized in a stall:D the elderly do the plant stalls, one has a camper van and gets her little pocket money so that she can travel a bit pay for the petrol and then come back and make some more:D
My nephew is exactly in the same position as your BF, got made redundant and then got offered a job in the same company but for a lot less £k per year, he took it, he had no choice, freshly married, mortgage, he took it.
I used to translate for the silly tourists that would 'wave goodbye to the beach' leaving their car full to the rafters on route home and when they got back their car was bare:rotfl::rotfl:
I have bought tickets and sold them on for a profit, someone bid on my enrique ticket for christ's sake:rotfl: I remember when I had my ebay shop open I had 90 items up and sold 87:D them were the days, there is so much choice now that quite often the ebay items come off unsold, I have the most fab wallis size 12 trouser tailored cream suit off the boot fair, put it on, no bids:rolleyes:
Now I do babysitting favour for favour no money involved as I have no proper qualifications, wanted to be a marriage counsellor or relate as it is known now but 5 years studying and the fees could not afford so that slipped by:rolleyes:
I have writen poems and had them publised in ladies mag (just a few, not a writer by trade:rotfl:) love writing and poetry, that art of communication has always facinated me, emails, mobiles, letter writing etc great invention:D
My CV has been professionally done, was going to pay for it but ended up as a ' gypsy trade':D also have the introductory letter that they expect.
My sis is just waiting for her CRB check so she can then work in her son's old school as a teachers assistant, a bit like me, not qualified but does this and that and gets by.:D0 -
OMG!OMG!OMG! I just got a letter from DWP-I've been awarded Higher mobility rate AND Lower care rate!!!!I was expecting lower mobility and NO care-and I woulda been happy with that too! And I was back paid to 23/02/2009! Do you think that deserves a chinese tonight?0

some great chat going on. It is so easy to sell ourselves short and yet see clearly the potential in others and I'm as guilty as the next one as that, though much better than I used to be.
Victory - your range of experience is phenominal. And you are very practical & creative in terms of making bits of money here and there : there simply must be a way to utilise that (I say this because I want you to get what you deserve, not as a chastisement - I know you have already tried really really hard.)
Can you brain storm with a large piece of paper and let your imagination run wild and write a random list of things you have ever done to make money or fantasised about giving a go Even add the seemingly ridiculous ones: don't apply any limits to yourself. Then, after 15 mins look at each one and see if there are any unexplored avenues there. I did this and ended up moving to brighton and it opened up my life enormously. It helped make the stuck and impossible possible. Seeing things in black and white can be as powerful and hearing yourself say it.
Have you looked up your local ad ed classes. I know most things won't start til Sept, but are there any courses that you feel your heart lift a little when you see them. Don't filter and just look for ones you 'ought' to do, look for what you fancy. This might give you a clue as to what you might try next.
I wonder if we get caught up in needing a job that brings in x amount a month and perhaps we need to turn that around and say, I want to bring in x amount a year and find 4 different ways to get to that total. It may not prove regular money, but if you keep tabs on it it will soon add up. And I really am saying this as much to myself as to anyone else here it is appropriate for.
Polka - you are so right about finding something you love and expanding that. And if it doesn't expand, it's a phase.
I have certainly envied people in the past who have a definite career choice - you know, like nurse or physio. My own problem is that I have never been able to tap into sufficient drive/energy to run my own business, but that may be slowly changing. I have set myself a medium term goal of making enough mosaics to take part in the art open house scheme in B this time next year as I have had very positive feed back on stuff I have made so far. And that all started on a whim last summer and signing up to a class.
POLKA - fantastic news and well deserved and woohoo on the back pay. OK you can have a chinese, but then think very carefully how to make max use of the back pay - perhaps fund your cake business a bit more?I try to take one day at a time, but sometimes several days attack me at once0 -
Victory: If you wanted a qualification as such, the college do free courses over the summer, you just apply and off you go. Often just one afternoon for 6 weeks...sometimes a fee is involved for materials but nothing hardcore. It may be an option for you. Of course if you wanted something more hardcore a fee would come into it but you can get it paid for you depending on your income. Perhaps tourism could be the way to go, i know they are always looking for people to work in travel agents, and if you could get to Dover they always want foreign speakers!
I empathise with everyone looking for a job. It makes you feel a bit worthless and that you have no purpose almost. There is so much i want to do but can't! argh.
Have you tried Kent free ads? Oh and if you had told me about the enrique tickets i may have been interested!! my friend and i are looking to go.
Polka: Well done!0 -
BB I shall have my chinese tonight then:DAnd I'll answer your other question about what I plan to do with the extra money now...First, we hand planned to withdraw money that we have saved in SA (from maintainance that SD pays for DS), to help pay deposit for our move (that we were not going to make but now have decided we will) but we'll use this instead. Then, I'm going to offer to add in an extra £100 to monthly rent. Currently, we pay £700 and have been looking to stay there. We've been told that if we could push to £750 we could probably find "almost" what we are looking for. So I figure upping it to £800 a month will make a huge difference between what we are in and what we can get.
Then...as I now officially receive DLA, I am entitled to concessions-which means I will be able to take DS to the sure start centre at the local college...and I'll get concession rate on my courses-so I think I'm going to look into a few flower making classes:j
I realise that currently it might be more "pc" to focus on the debt we have (we have some-but it's a drop in the bucket compared to some SOA's I've seen) and I figure, right now, we live in our house. I have freecycled all the finer little things so that our house is a happy place to be-so that we actually LIVE in our home, rather than it being a shell where we come to eat and sleep. I think the garden and extra bedroom is a small thing to ask in lieu of all the nights out and holidays that we have sacrificed over the years. And as for the classes-I haved proved to myself (and all the doubting Thomas' in my life) that I have a talent that is supported by a passion, and you need to spend a little money to make a litte money.0 -
Victory - I havent got time to read all what has been said to you as I should have already left the house (!) but have you looked into things like surestart centers etc? They do all sorts mostly in more deprived areas with high rates of single parents etc you could help young women sort out their finances (very qualified for that!) work with the children, help with parenting, healthy diet etc the services they offer are fantastic now (have researched them a lot for uni) and they have all sorts of roles. Something like that would be very rewarding i think. Right will catch up later!0
