Direct debits DO come out early ... if the due date falls on a saturday or sunday then you can be pretty sure that the direct debit will come out on the friday previous or if its bank hol monday when the direct debit is due then it will come out on the friday before as well

But is your account completely empty before you get paid? Personally i think it is sailing a bit close to the wind to have DD's set up to be taken only 1 day after you get paid because it doesn't account for bank holidays, wages going in late etc & is asking for trouble.

My DD's are set up for certain dates but i make sure well in advance that the funds are already there just in case. I do understand the OP's frustration but when you manage your finances so tightly to the line then you have to be pretty on the ball.

Even if i did have DD's set up for one day after being paid i wouldn't take every last penny out before i get paid again.

I personally don't manage my finances so tightly, if for some bizarre reason all my DDs went out before I got paid then I would be fine but it has never happened. When the 21st falls on a weekend or bank holiday then they always go out later, I just assumed this was the DD standard but obviously not.

It did state 'on or around' not 'on or after'. Sadly I think you need to accept the mistake and do as I (and probably many others) do and set DD's for about 5 days after payday - thus avoiding this potential problem. Maybe it's the Cards I've had in the past but mine never seems to fall on a set day - my halifax CC varies from 16th to 22nd over the course of the year.

But I do think some of you are being too harsh - I know my bank is down to it's last few quid for a good few days before payday...such is life!
Wondering how to have a life & not rack up more debts...

Maybe I'm talking rubbish then! I'm off to check, maybe I set them all for the 23rd that's why they don't come out early, most of them are years old so memory must be shaky!

Just checked the first one I could find a letter for, it does say payments will be collected on or around the 21st but for the last 14 months have been taken between the 21st and 24th. Hardly a full market study but it does happen - must depend on the company.

when i opened up mine on the phone when activating he told me the d/d will come out between 11th and 16th of each month.

mine is due on 13th each month.

im guessin this is standard on the 'credit building' card?!

therefore OP should have this info applicable to them aswell... therefore OP in the wrong.

I set all my direct debits to be a week or so after my pay day, because they do tend to wander around a bit.

I have been hit with late payment charges on credit cards a few times, either because a statement has somehow got lost in my in tray and I've not had a direct debit set up, or I've genuinely not received a statement in the post.

However, on just about every occasion, a polite letter to customer services apologising and saying that I had not received a statement, loyal customer, blah blah, has seen the fees refunded. Easier to be calm and collected in a letter, and you dont have someone on the end of a telephone following a 'how not to refund charges' script.
  • Well, I have hit a nerve with some people obviously, do some of you work for Capital One?! As I said, this is the first time I have EVER had any sort of penalty charge. Thats why I agreed I would pay 1 late payment charge. The fact is, unexpected things arose close to payday, hence why there was only 3 quid in the account. It seems the people who are being harsh and judging me have perfect lives with no mishaps or unexpected things arising.....ever! I agreed that teh payment bounced, and agreed to pay 1 charge. In the end, I spoke with them last night, explained again that this is the first time i have been charged, we agreed on 2 of the 3 charges being paid and moved my direct debit date forward, at a charge!! Think on next payday, ill pay the balance in full.....unless some thing UNEXPECTED crops up!!

Seriously, some of you need to relax.
  • oh and also, its not a 'credit building' card as stated by somone previously.....just had to get that in there...

Seriously, you need to think up a better story as you cannot be charged for moving your DD forward !
