You will not be saving 2k. All that will happen is instead of discounts on the OTR price being met by dealers/manufacturers it will be met by the taxpayer.
Before
i.e new car 15k otr - sold for 13k with 2k dealer discounts. Dealer takes in 13k buyer pays 13k
After
new car 15k otr sold for 15k with 13k from customer and 2k from taxpayer. Dealer makes 15k.
This scheme is to save the industry, not to help taxpayers buy new cars and anyone wanting to buy them will see little if any discount on current prices.
Your making assumptions that Dealers will withdraw the discounts. Thats not part of the scheme. That is upto the individual dealers. You may be right but its not definite.
Also dealers will foot £1000 of the £2000 discount for the cars so your figures are wrong.0 -
Well, I'm happy - my R reg escort is sputtering along at the moment, and I was holding off even looking around to see if the £2K scrap allowance came in

i'm not a tree hugger or anything like that, but how does it make environmental sense to send all these perfectly useable cars to the scrappy ??0
-
In Germany, cars were originally scrapped for parts, now there are so many spare parts in store that the cars are just being destroyed. But what happens when those spare parts run out? I've a 2001 car and will check with breakers first if anything needs fixing, rather than pay main dealer prices.. That option will be a lot more difficult in future!0

We have two old cars which we would be happy to consolidate into one new, I assume the 2k is only per new car and can't be added together.I'd rather be an Optimist and be proved wrong than a Pessimist and be proved right.0

Give it a year and all the idiots who rushed out to buy a new car they couldnt afford will be getting them reposessed0

The other side of this coin is cars after 2001 are in the "NEW" tax bands so at present you can buy a K reg 4x4 and polute all you want for £120 a year trade that car in now and unless you get a £35 small engine hatchback your guarenteed to be paying the higher new tax rates. If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

My 8/9 year old (y reg) 2.0 diesel astra is lesser CO2 emittions to teh current 1.9 cdti diesel astra ... show me how thats greaner ??
Actually the newer cars are greener, Its not a simple fact of comparing a older 2.0 litre engine to a newer engine of the same size.
Times have changed and smaller sized engines pump out just as much power as an older bigger engine.
For example your 2.0 might pump out 153 CO2, the 1.9cdti might do 157 CO2 but your 2.0 is only a 88Bhp engine whilst the 1.9 is a 150BHP and much better performance.
You need to compare like for like in and your case your engine is more like one of the 1.3 or 1.7litre newer cars which have lower CO2 than you car. Around 118-130CO2 thus greener on emissons yet similar performance or even better performance.0 -
