So if you want to buy a new car, presumably you go out and buy the cheapest banger you can for £100 to take to the dealer?

10 years old is a bit harsh. 1999 - Y reg was it? Those cars are still going strong. Seems a bit of waste to scrap them but I guess the majority are worth under £2000 so people will do it.

And if you are a used car dealer, all eligible cars are now put up from £100 to £1900 :rotfl:

Don't you have to own the car for a certain amount of time. e/g One year to trade in for £2000?

As the scheme is till Mar 2010 which is under the year ownership limit.;)

    Damn, foiled!

Not that saving £2k on a brand new car would make it worth changing from my 52 plate car that I'm very happy with. :)
  • People clearly dont understand the scheme

You will not be saving 2k. All that will happen is instead of discounts on the OTR price being met by dealers/manufacturers it will be met by the taxpayer.

    Before

i.e new car 15k otr - sold for 13k with 2k dealer discounts. Dealer takes in 13k buyer pays 13k

    After

new car 15k otr sold for 15k with 13k from customer and 2k from taxpayer. Dealer makes 15k.

This scheme is to save the industry, not to help taxpayers buy new cars and anyone wanting to buy them will see little if any discount on current prices.

Every T reg and older now revised on ebay to £1995 pmsl

and a lot of t reg cars will still be in good servicable condition if they are still on the road.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

But as a buyer I'd know that the dealer is getting £2k from the Government and therefore still negotiate some discounts or tell him to stick it.

And I thought it was designed to help with all the green stuff (because, you know, the process of producing a brand new car is so good for the environment ;))

  • I doubt that the dealers will withdraw their discounts.

Unless there are lots of foolish people who will now pay List. Then we've only got ourselves to blame.

N.b In germany you have to have owned the car for a year. I expect our scheme will mirror that, so don't get giddy about any money making ideas just yet :)
