Car Scrappage just announced [MERGED]

Just heard it on the radio - the European schemes were true 2k subsidies. This UK one, based on UK govts cynical assessment of what the UK punter will stand for, is a 1k subsidy and 1k contribution from manufacturer.
So if you are talking about the cheaper end, eg the Perodua (oddly enough these are the 'greener' cars) where manufacturers/dealers margins are wafer thin, DO NOT expect any hope of 2k off list. Manufacturer/dealers will just opt out.0 -
Now taking another slanted view.....
has a 10 year old + car just gone up in value?? As one of the criteria is that a scrapper car has to be owned for a year, and the scheme commences in 3 weeks and it is anticipated to last over a year..... is a £500 car's value just increased, as long as it is sold in the next 4 weeks (before the commencement of the scheme in mid may)
Secondly - If I/you keep hold of a 10+ year old car, once the scheme ends there will be a shortage of bottom-end cars (around 330,000 are expected to take this offer - thats how much the funding is worth), so the value of a £500 car will stagnate for at least a year or possibly increase due to the shortage of such cars.Praying at the church of MSE should be compulsory!
There are three types of people in the world, those who can add up and those who can't.0 -
HI
It's annoying a brand new car is £4,000 to 5,000 more than a 1 year old car (well the one I want to buy) ....therefore I am not scrapping mine as I will lose out...there is always a catch!!...

Manufacturers will surely just put prices up right? On base spec small cars they won't make much money if they have to 'lose' £1000 profit. Bet they'll add £1.5k to list price!
Yes. If you check some manufacturer's sites, you'll notice that some models appear to have just risen 1 or 2k in price!0 -
Alternatively there's a 17 year old classic car enthusiast here willing to take such a specimen of superb German engineering off your hands.

The government never seems to take into account, when promoting all these new 'green' cars, the carbon emissions involved in the actual production of the cars. Parts are frequently shipped right across the world for new cars, often negating much of the reduced carbon emissions of running the car.0

Anyone taking possession of a 10 year old car today hoping to cash in in 1 year's time is taking a chance - the scheme states it will end when the fixed budget is spent. So rather a big risk, eh?
Also, though many cars over 10 yrs will have been sucked off the market, there'll be loads of 'new' 10 years olds to replace them. Little impact on the used market I would say. In some countries of the world people own fewer cars all round - perhaps the UK is about to join them.0 -
Lets face it, the whole scheme is just rubbish and ill - thought out.
When i first heard about it, i thought "great might be the first time i will buy a new car", but whatever way you look at it (apart from the peruda at 2.5K which will be unlikely) there is nothing "Moneysaving" about this scheme, you need to buy a damn cheap car to make the 2k work and those cars won't be in the scheme or the prices will be inflated due to the new demand.
What about potential jobs losses for the local garages that MOT, service and repair these old cars?? If everyone buys new, they will have less work not to mention the knock on effect with parts manufacturers and suppliers Has anyone thought about that?!
Overall i think its a huge, huge waste of taxpayers money that could be better spent elsewhere!0
