  • I have contacted BT to install a new line+new socket for 3 weeks, placed 4 orders and cancelled 3 of them. Every time they just activate my new number without providing a new socket. For the fourth order, they made an appointment to come in my house on 16/09/09 between 8 am-1 pm but the engineer didn’t appear. I guess they will cancel my fourth order and place a new one again. Waste of times and really disappointed with their service.

Just thought I'd add my experience to the list. Bit of a long story so will try to keep it to the point!

Called first time, had no problem getting the free line installation however when I asked for the £14.20 inclusive evening and weekend he quoted a higher price, about £16. He said there was no way to lower this price on the system, he could not override this. He then said that it will be because the offer is available online which will be cheaper. I asked him to guide me through the website which of course he couldnt. In the end I gave up.

Second call I changed tack and quoted the web address that quotes the offer (bit of a long web address so took a while!). He had a quick look and went yep no problem. But jeez, did the whole thing take some time - about 40 minutes in all I reckon. He seemed to struggle identifying my address. I live in an apartment that was built 3 years ago which was what was causing the problem. The funny thing was that I told him several times that I could find my address on a dummy online purchase with BT no problem, but perhaps it is different in the call centre. He then had to enter the address manually.

Anyway after all that (about 25 minutes later), he then had to do a credit check, but it failed as my address that had been fudged was not recognised. Another 5 minutes to sort that one out. Anyway its all booked and hopefully the line will be up and running in a couple of weeks.

The one strange thing was that he quoted me £15.45 a month and said that the paperless billing discount of £1.20 will apply to make the bill £14.20 as stated in the offer. What was bizarre though was that he said that he can not set up paperless billing and I will need to do that myself once the line is up and running to get the discount. Is that correct?

    hello

I applied online for a BT line and the free connection fee was done automatically for me. I did not have to ask at all. I was ready to haggle but did not have to!! They just stipulate that its an 18 month contract.. you do get a choice whether or not you want to go down this route.

one happy bunny anyway. Thanks for the info on this. It made me join up in the first place. Pre warned is forwarned. Thanks MSE !!!

Do you have an active line already present?
Try to imagine nothing ever existed...

Hi hillwalker2004, with the connection offer, you are entering an 18 month contract with the standard charge of £15.45 a month. You then can apply for paper free billing to gain a discount of £1.25 a month leaving your rental at £14.20 a month, however if this is a new account with BT then the BT account number will not be allocated until the line is due to go active and therefore online billing can not be set up until you receive your account details in the post as due to security reasons BT can not give you your account number over the phone or through an email! Hope this clears things up for you.. Thanks Natasha BT Support

  • hi been reading your posts and helpful replies maybe you can help me out

i moved into flat 9 weeks ago and need a new line have rang bt 3 times and on each occasion they said need to pay the 122 pound cuz line cany just be activated and needs a new line is this right really want a phone and broadband :(
  • Did this today - took 4 calls to eventually catcth a Customer Options Team rep that was willing to help.

I said I wanted a second line & had been informed it was free installation. At first he & his manager did not know what I was talking about. Further chatting revealed they did have a free installation offer but not for a 'second-line'. I had to create a new a/c (as reported in earlier posts).

After that everything worked smoothly (so far) & I've got a second line installation booked for next week - free of charge.

Since I now have two completely seperate BT lines I asked if I could simply telephone myself 10 times a mth (ie new number to old number) to fulfill my mimimum call obligation & if I did this at week-ends would these calls be free. Answer = yes :j

So now all I need to do is go buy a cheap handset !!!

My thanks to MSE for pointing out this offer.
  • My friend got this deal in January so she could get broadband. She was told it would take 5 working days...can you believe that she is still waiting for broadband some 8 months later. They set new promises every 1-2 weeks. Just thought I'd point it out.
  • I have a rather dodgy (BT) line at the moment. With this offer, could I get a 'second' line fitted and then cancel my existing line ? I'm not keen on paying two sets of line rentals every month, but would like to use the free offer to get a new line fitted.

Anyone know if this is possible ?
