  • I rang BT today at 08000800150 to enquire about their free line installation and was told by them that in order to qualify I would have to to take up all three packages - Calls, Broadband & TV.

    Is this correct?

Welcome to the MSE forums jacdon.

No, that is not correct - you obviously got through to a BT 'agent' who was more concerned about his/her commission (the package you mention is known to them as 'the triple', and earns them the most) than customer service.

As Ypaymore has suggested, call again.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • BT tried to sting me for the £122.50 that they try to get everyone who move homes with. They appear to apply a different policy in practise when you call them up to that which is stated publicly on their website.

I recently moved house and was with BT. Prior to moving I called the Home Moving service, they advised that I would be charged the £122.50 for connection of the line in the house I was moving to. When I queried the charge as the previous occupant was with BT and was also with BT broadband, therefore why a reconnection fee, their rep stated that they charge all home movers the connection fee. I stated that this policy was in contravention of that which is clearly stated on their website which states:
    Starting your move
If there's a working BT line in the property connection should be free of charge, but if the line needs to be reconnected to BT or a new line is required, a connection charge of £122.50 will apply. Our advisors will confirm this when you call.

I also stated that how do I know whether the line is working or not prior to moving to a property, and that BT are in control of when properties are disconnected. I challenged them that their actual policy of charging all customers for moving was in contravention of their written policy and that this was unfair and that I would take this up with the regulator Oftel, they immediately passed my call to a supervisor, who then agreed to waive the connection fee.

They still sent an engineer to the house I moved to for the '5 min £122.50 job' all housemovers appear to get, to ensure the line was working, which the engineer confirmed was already working. And they have also tried to charge me subsequently despite the agreement to waive.

I will be writing to Oftel with my experiences which is clearly an abuse of BT's position in the market and a cynical profiteering scam.

I am hoping that the info provided above may help others achieve the same fair outcome, and stop BT's abuse of the position they are in :naughty:.

  • I know this is a little off-topic but interesting none the less. I live in Ireland (ROI) and the national phone company Eircom, do exactly the same, even the charge is similar.

Eircom usually have a free connection offer online, on their web site, but if you phone up and ask to be connected the charge is up to €121.93. Plus they do the same thing of billing you the connection charge even though you've ordered online, and the free offer applies. They "chance their arm" and try to get the charge from you anyway.

I'm not sure who learned this sharp practice from who; BT from Eircom or Eircom from BT, but I can confirm, Eircom have been doing this for years in Ireland.
  • So, if I only need 9months of line rental, this wouldnt apply to me then? Will I be able to transfer the line to another place or must this line only be at one place for 18mths? Thanks.

"Customers moving home and retaining an account with BT can take the remaining minimum term of their chosen calling plan with them. "

But you you may incur another connection charge and you want be able to get another 18 month free connection deal.
  • I still dont quite understand. Doesnt that clause only apply to existing customers?

As I am a new customer, after using the line for 9months on this plan, I will be away for 3 months, therefore will be unable to make the required 10calls/month for that 3months so I will be charged extra for the three months. Then, after those 12months, I will be back again and be moving into a new home. I suppose then they'll be charging me the 120+pounds to setup the line in my new place? Will I be able to transfer the remaining contract (6months)? If that is the case, then I believe I am saving on the first setup, rather than paying for two setups if I dont go for this promo? Or is this not worth it in my case?

Also, how long normally does it take to setup the line? Will I be able to register for one before moving into my new place this october, so that I dont have to wait that long for phone/internet when I move in?

    Appreciate all the help. Thanks.

I've just rang up BT because I'm moving house tomorrow (Woo! :j) They said they could give me free line rental if I took out a TV/Phone/Internet package. Turns out the package I wanted was £50.38, and it was a 12 month contract.

    BUT!

Then I was on the Sky website, and they offered me £39 installation of phone line (plus £30 setup costs) and a £40.50 contract, with HD Box (minus subscription). I also get £50 Marks and Spencers vouchers back by being referred.

So my first year Sky cost is only £555 compared to £604.56 for BT. A saving of £49.56, plus an extra £50 voucher.

I got this offer by chatting with someone over the Sky website - so keep an eye on them if you're wanting to switch :-D

The other option they gave me was
£40.50 per month plus £118 set up costs, with an £11 reduction on line rental for 6 months.
Totalling £538 for the year. Just a standard box with this one though, and no M&S Voucher.

    Thought I'd share my find!

    Happy Saving!x

**EDIT - With The BT offer I was told about over the phone, I never got told that 10 chargeable calls needed to be made each month, I just had to subscribe to one of their packages, starting at £18.50p/m**

Oh dear. Wish you'd come here and asked first.

BT line installation (choose your own TV and ISP later) for nothing if you agree to an 18 month contract and make 10 chargeable OR inclusive calls per month.

    Total cost, 12 x £11.25 = £135.00
