I'm just posting to give an update on my problem. The customer service reps on this site seem to be able to cut throught the cr*p spouted by BT's normal customer diservice dept. I can thoroughly recommend contacting them to try and resolve your problems with the free offer. I have now received a satisfactory explanation of what is happening with my particular case.
Of interest to you may be that there is a cost limit to the free offer; If a connection is going to cost BT more than £3,500 then it no longer qualifies for the free offer and becomes a chargable connection. However the BT rep did not know what would happen say if the cost to BT of installation came to say, £4,000 would the customer have to pay the £500 difference or the full £4,000. Fotunately my connection is coming in well under the £3,500 limit.0 -
I might be taking up this offer soon. Does anyone know what happens if I end up with no phone line for a period (e.g. staying in a guest house while sorting out a place to stay) part way through the 18 month contract? Will I have to pay the £122-odd connection fee back in full? Or can I keep paying the monthly line rental until I've got my own place and can start using a BT phone line again?0

Your difficulty would be complying with the 10 calls per month requirement.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Good point. What would happen then: would I be made to pay out the remaining line rental, without having a line? Or to pay back the £122?0

[STRIKE]The latter, I think.[/STRIKE]

Fair enough. It would be a pain if that is the case - might go with another company, then.0

Hi bitsandpieces, basically to qualify for this offer you must have both your line and calls through BT and make 10 chargeable or inclusive calls calls per month (30 per quarter) with BT or you will be charged £6.80 per month or £20.40 per quarter on your bill. This charge will appear in the One off charges section of the bill.“Official Company Representative

Thanks for making that clear. That's more reasonable than some companies.
Out of interest, if someone did just leave BT within the 18 months, is the charge to them limited at the £122 the line would have cost, or could they be charged the full remaining line rental + £20.40 per quarter?0 -

"If the customer decides to end the contract within the 18 month minimum term, they will incur a single charge of £7.50(on the Unlimited Weekend and Unlimited Evening & Weekend plans) or £8.00(on the Unlimited Anytime plan) for each month left of the minimum term."
