It would be logical for BT to invoke breach of contract procedures if you opt for a CPS calls provider within the contract period.

In any case, as syko29793 says, the 1280 prefix would not work - so you couldn't directly make the required 10 calls per month on BT (although the workaround of using a BT Calling Card could overcome that).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Slightly naive question but does anyone know whether BT is actually enforcing the 10 calls per month thing? I've just checked my online account and noticed i only made 8 calls in my first month, oops! My bill hasn't been generated yet, should i be expecting the full connection charge to be imposed?? Someone on an earlier post said there would be a £10 penalty?

No getting sky talk means you wont be able to make the min calls with BT to have the free connection offer.

    Yes
get sky to install the line via Openreach which avoids you having get BT Retail to connect the line and the 12/18 month contract.

    Hi,

I am just wondering how long it takes from BT installing the phone line to the line up and running? We are moving into a new house end of September so wont have any previous phones lines etc, is it an instant set up or does it take a while for BT to get a new phone number, line etc sorted?

    Thanks

    Laura

    Hi Laura,

It could take as little as two working days, but It depends on what kind of work is required to get the line up and running e.g. if you need a brand-new line installed it will take longer.

    Thanks,

  • Hi Just had the free line installed - yes I had to ask and they put me on hold but it was agreed to be free. Just got paperwork today and they are trying to charge £29 - ie the 122 les 92 discount.

I had to argue very hard and stand my ground and he was adamant that the £29 fee is correct as everyone charges an installation fee (not Virgin I told him and they give you a freee laptop) but after threathening to cancel and checking with supervisor he confirmed the FREE installation is not available anymore and it is 29.95 but as a jesture of goodwill on this occasion I would not have to pay the fee- So guys dot your eyes cross your ts and document the conversation. Oh and the 12.50 monthly rental can be reduced by 1.50 if you go online to bt.com and register for paperless billing.

If you took a 18 month contract the FREE Connection offer is still available to end of Sept 2009.

On a 12 month contract if your home has had a telephone service from BT in the recent past, and the wiring and socket is undamaged and the line still has dialling tone, you should get free connection anyway.

  • I've just managed to get the free line installation at my new address. Hard work, but worth it.. if you're reading this cause BT told you the offer doesn't exist, you're not working hard enough! They'll make it sound like it's especially for you, cause apparently, this is not an official offer. But as I called about it, they let me have it... basically, stick to your guns and you'll save yourself £122.50. No less. Go for it!

Ask for the Customer Options Team if you get a "the computer says no" bod.
