Yes, and as a disabled low income member of the public, I feel in my circumstances the totally OTT quote by BT and openreach is pretty disgusting added to what sounded like a little "showy" request about actually using the line you have had fitted for free :p

A letter I have recieved from OFCOM states, quoted word for word, that,

"BT's standard charge for an installation is normally £124.99. However, if the installation will cost over £3,400, BT requires the customer to pay the excess costs (plus the standard connection charge). ""

Now, from how I read it, if the installation is under £3,400, BT charges only £124,99, if its over, they charge the rest. As my line only needs to come 4 foot from an already available BT link in the ground, my £500.00 quote is pretty ridiculous.

Added to this, a friend who has recently had a house built in a country location needed a line bringing 3/4 of a mile, what was his charge by BT and openreach? £124.99......Its no wonder I feel pretty irate at my treatment so far.

    Thanks to utilitybroker.

In response to sunnyd47 for this:

Thanks for your very helpful comment. Obviously you know all about my circumstances and that I need a BT line for some other services that I have provided by BT [the I pay for].

And I would like to say, without sarcasm, that I hope your situation works out and you can get a phone line installed for a reasonable price, as I am sure you have looked at all other options.

I have the Virgin line and may want to switch back to BT, my BT line has a dial tone but can't make calls, on the website it says they charge you to reconnect if there is no tone, so does it mean I should reconnect for free?

I'm wondering whether I should take up this offer. My landline is with Bulldog Broadband (they took over the line rental form BT a few year's ago under the Local Loop Unbundling scheme - as far as i can tell this idea has since died on its feet).

I'm not unhappy with Bulldog; in fact the speed of my broadband is great and I pay less than £20/month for the line rental and unlimited broadband use. It may also include evening and/pr weekend calls, I'm not really sure as I don't make many calls (I have a mobile deal for that). But I am worried about what might happen in the future - Bulldog were bought by Pipex who in turn were bought by Tiscali who are apparently bankrupt and their parent company are trying to sell them...

I investigated some time ago the possibility of changing my broadband to another supplier (Orange, O2, Virgin, anybody!) but none of them are able to take me on because I don't have a BT line. I asked BT if they would take me back, which they offered to do for a charge of £150! That's even more than just getting a second line put in.

I even looked at Tiscali tariffs which at first glance appeared to be cheaper than the Bulldog tariff I'm on. Tiscali offered to take the line from Bulldog (who they own) for a mere £100!! I asked Ofcom about this who basically said, "Yes, that's terrible but completely legal and there's nothing we can do".

I'm wondering if I should just phone BT and get a new line put in - unfortunately that'll tie me in for 18 months to a supplier I don't really want (especially their overpriced broadband). Presumably then I can just cancel my deal with Bulldog and the old line will be disconnected.

Does anybody have any info on what's happening with Tiscali/Pipex/Bulldog - should I jump ship while I can or will I continue to get a good deal and fast, reliable broadband?

  • Hi BT Rep.

Just to let you know I've sent you a PM with the problems I'm having with the free installation 2nd phone line I've ordered. If it's not resolved and the money you took today isn't back in my bank account by Monday evening, I'm cancelling my order.

    Thank you.

    Hi ichiban,

If you have a BT point in your address and it has a dial tone there should not be a charge for the reconnection of the line. The connection charge only applies is the line has no dial tone and an engineer is needed to carry out work to activate the line.

Tried this and as I was on a 'present deal' couldn't have the benifit - lost temper - Got out of BT hold-in ('present deal') for £40, went with the Post Office at £107 line connection and £20 per month instead of £32 - a great saving in all and exactly the same (if not a little better) than BT.

Being MoD, I do this a lot and it gets very expencive - thanks GPO (or what ever they are called today)
