Had to register so that I could tell you all about my experience and hopefully the BT Rep on the forum will assit in resolving this - I managed to sign up for the free line connection offer without any hiccups and the whole process only took a few minutes to sign up unlike alot of people here.
I am a pensioner and I took up this offer purely because of the free line connection offer with a view to then migrate to BT Basic as the terms of the free line connection clearly state that I can migrate to BT Basic without fulfilling the remainder of thier minimum term contract and I qualify as I am in reciept of guaranteed pension credit.
So I rang up BT Basic to ask to be migrated to BT Basic who said since I got a free line connected I would have to pay the full line connection to transfer to BT Basic, I pointed out that the free line connection states that I can migrate to BT Basic and no where does it state that I would have to pay the line connection fee if I did this...Here's an extract from BT's webpage regarding this...
4. Customers who qualify for BT Basic may migrate without fulfilling the remainder of their minimum term.
I then spent almost an hour trying to make them understand this and after being put on hold several times to speak to her manager all I kept getting back from the BT operator was..."You have to pay the connection fee to migrate to BT Basic" ...I tried to explain I only took up this offer to avoid having to pay the connection fee and I could have signed up to BT Basic without using this offer if I wanted to pay the line connection fee in the first place...this just wasn't getting through to the BT operator despite asking her to show me where it says that I would be charged the full connection fee if I migrated to BT Basic. I then said that I wanted to caoncel the line if they cannot transfer me onto BT Basic and was told that I would have to pay £7.50 for every month left in the 18 month contract, yet I am not in breach of the contract, if anything BT are in breach as they are the ones not willing to transfer me onto BT Basic. To top it all the BT operator hung up on me when I again asked her to point me to where it says that I have to pay the connection fee if I migrate to BT Basic  This really made me angry and I tried calling back but couldn't get through, not sure if the BT Basic lines are closed after 8.00 PM.
I had been warned about BT being shoddy and to stay away from them and this just seems to prove it.
Anyone out there in a similar situation ?....any advice on what I should do will be appreciated.0 -
hi all.
I've just taken up Sky Talk for £10 a month, with the first 3 months free. If, in the future I wish to return to BT will they charge me to activate my line back with BT again ????0 -

If, in the future I wish to return to BT will they charge me to activate my line back with BT again ????Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0

Have just spent AGES on the phone to BT about the free second line...Not really free, they are saying Martin has it wrong again. They will install a 2nd line BUT you will get another number AND will have to pay 2 lots of line rental. Thought it would be a good idea for my Mum and was going to get her broadband too!! Not going to bother now.:mad:0 -
Hi pajee,
Sorry to hear of all the problems you are having trying to get onto BT Basic. I have checked the conditions of the offer and you are able to downgrade to BT Basic after the offer has been placed without being held to term and without having to pay the connection charge providing you meet the eligibility for BT Basic.
If you are having problems with any advisor doing this for you ask to speak with either their coach or manager to get the order progressed. If you still encounter problems after this please PM your BT account number and I will leave a note on your account to say you should not be held to term or pay the cancellation charge when downgrading.
In response to shaggy if the line is still active if in the future you wish to come back to BT the connection charge would not apply as there would currently be an active working line in the property.

I have just moved into a new house which as no phone socket and the cabling on the outside has been damaged. The previous owners werent the sort to lookafter things but BT want to chrge £115 to come and fit a new socket on the wall for me to be able to use the service as they keep saying everything is fine, when it isnt as I havent got a socket.
Is this right? If so I might just do it myself.0 -

thanks for the prompt replyIt'll be £11 per month by the time your free period is over.
you mean after the 3 'free' months ?? So are you saying they'll sneakily put up the price to £11 for all customers (currently its £10 ?)
In which case its very sneaky of them and I'll just cancel the switchover - i get 14 days to stop it anyway . In any case I use 0844/0845/0870 numbers a fair bit on my BT line, and im sure BT are cheaper than Sky for those.0 -

I would like to thank Stephanie for her help in sorting out all my problems regarding getting the free line connection. It really is straight forward when your not talking to an Indian call centre.
Many thanks, your a star.0
