My two cents as I've just had to move my line.
My situation:
1. I signed up to 12 month contract with BT at present property and they said cancelling would incure £70 fee when I signed up, but I've only been here 6 months.
2. New property has no dial tone.
3. I need to have alternative call provider as we make a lot of long calls to US and BT does not do free international calls. i.e. I can't do the 10 calls per month thing.
All of this added up to a big worry, I rang round alternative providers (btw Talk Talk are trialing line installations @ £59.99, 24 month contract, requires broadband take up. Link is here: talk talk dot co dot uk forward slash newlines)
But then I though I'd just give BT moving people a call I said I was after a quote to move, and she tested the line at the new property and said it was active (I didn't argue!) so I could just transfer my phone line over at no cost what so ever.
So my advice is before you rush in and get a new line with this offer or paying for one outright, if you have an account, see if they will transfer your account via the moving team.
Best of luck!

As has been mentioned on here many times before whether your a BT moving customer, or a new one,you may not have to pay a connection if the home wiring and socket, and the line between your residence and the exchange is still intact.
Who does offer FREE calls to USA or are they actually Inclusive.:D0 -

This offer from talktalk ONLY applies to addresses that BT have passed to them, as mine is a newly delivered property (on a park that has been running for 35 years) BT have not passed the address on to others, therefore, ONLY BT can install a line.
At a guess, I think that this offer from talktalk will only apply to properties that have already been registered with BT in the past.
I think that these offers are actually using the wrong terminology and are actually very misleading, there is a major difference between "installation" and "connection" and they both appear to be offering "connection" and not "installation!"0 -
Hello,
1st time poster here. I'm moving house shortly and have been told that I would need to pay the £122.50 to connect the phone line to my new house. Which is kinda annoying as I had to pay £122.50 six months ago when I moved into my current place. I have spoke to customer service and also customer retentions and they have both said the same thing,I have to pay, even when I threatened to cancel the contract (which I don't really want to do as the cancellation fee is nearly as much as the reconnection fee). No one has mentioned the free offer discussed here (although interestingly two of the people I spoke to said they had experienced the same problem themselves- coincidence or attempt to get me to like them- who knows?). Virgin can offer me a better deal with no connection fee but ideally I'd just like to transfer the line and contine as before, any ideas anyone?

You could even get a Vonage account with a US phone number, if it would suit you or the people you call.koru0 -
Vonage's inclusive packages will give you US calls 24/7 for an extra £1 per month on top of the UK calls package. £7 pm in total. You do need broadband to use Vonage, but it is very easy to set up and use.

Had never heard of Vonage, thanks for the heads up. It looks pretty good.
I wonder if you can still use their service via a double ethernet adapter as I use my ethernet connection, I assume you can.0 -
The BT offer has now been extended until Sept.0

Youve got to laugh really.......I now have the official BT reason for a £500 line installation charge, and I quote.
"The cost of getting a line connected at your address is for £ 420 (excl. VAT) due to the kind of work required. It consists of a £ 350 (excl VAT) survey charge, and the remainder is for the work required for a 2 metre of duct on soft ground."
Now, when applying for this "free line installation" offer, I was informed by BT that openreach had to come and do a site survey to which I said OK, of course, thinking its only a small job which it is.
Without my knowing or being informed by BT this apparently required survey by openreach was apparently adding £350.00 (+vat) onto any installation charge.
This fee for one man who stayed for 3 minutes to tell me that a shallow trench of 4 feet needed to be dug and a hole drilled through a plastic box. This is extortionate and purely BT and openreach making the most of their "CLOSED SHOP" installations between themselves.
"£ 420 (excl. VAT) due to the kind of work required."
Wrong actually, £70 is is for the kind of work required and I would not mind paying that in the least, even under such a "free installation offer".
