Will be having a new Virgin (line) tomorrow. Don't tell Sid about D offer, he will also be turned down. Taffthetip.

I moved into a new property which already had a BT box in it, I rang BT and asked if they could connect me and was told I would incur this ridiculous charge for an engineer having to come out (which they didnt). Apparently they only had to go to the local junction box!!!

Who do you think has to pay for the new line to be connected/wired from the exchange to the new property. You the first occupier. The builders just do the internal wiring. If you had to pay the full going commercial rate for the job i guess you would have been shocked.
  • Why don't you all pay the £122 and get connected quick.

Why you may ask when you may be able to get it free.

I have tried and would be more than happy to pay the connection charge. The killer is the 'extra charges' that come from OpenReach to get a new line to my property.

BT have recently quoted me a total of £26,802 and a few pence for a phone line with broadband capabilities, and all this is Open Reach charges.

It is itemised, for example Survey Charge £350, Small footway box £750, 516 metres of soft duct £18,060 etc, etc.

Not surprisingly I cancelled the order.

I just wanted to say a big thank you for putting this information on your website, I would never have known about it otherwise. I rang BT regarding the offer and there was no problem in signing up to it and they were most hlpful and explained everything clearly, and I also signed up for their broadband and was given a free wireless router. I explained that thouse I was moving to wouldn't be ready until 31st July and that is when everything will be connected! Thanks MSE

Wow, yes I do understand your point.

I have choosen Vodafone Mobile Broadband paying the same amount, as I am now, a better speed than BT can provide and I can have it where I want it.

Might I suggest you also look at the mobile providers and least cost routing?

Thats already well if you can get a decent signal and have a laptop.

How will least cost routing benefit them?, they have agreed to a contract that requires them to place a minimum number of calls via BT.This is not always possible if you move your calls to another supplier.

They could of course always use www.18185.co.uk indirect access for certain calls.

You can still use the 1280 prefix to send those 'necessary' calls via BT when subscribing to most CPS calls providers (not Sky Talk, Talk Talk*, AOL or Orange though).

    * However, I have read that Talk Talk now accept subscribers' instructions to move them off WCLI and back to CPS.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Yes but Least Cost Routing and Carrier Pre Select are two different things.:D

  • Before I even found this great offer, I had originally been told that it would be 122.50 for the connection charge. So I hopped to virgin to see if they could help and no luck. TalkTalk was about to be my only option till I found this. Took 10 mins, got a date settled for the 8th of July and quarterly billing at 37.50 which should go down after I go for paperless billing, Thank you MSE!
