I'm considering taking up this offer as I don't have a BT line. The thing is, I mainly want it for the internet as I make all my calls on my mobile - would it be worth signing up for an 18 month contract just so I can get the internet?
I know Virgin install their line for about £30 but does that restrict me to using their own internet? Last time I checked I wasn't in a Virgin cabled area so can't get their broadband, and I think a lot of other companies say you need a BT line.
Any advice is much appreciated, thanks.April Grocery Challenge: £80/£64.39

With a BT landline, you can choose whichever ISP you want.
BT has a free installation offer until the end of this month but there are conditions (mainly, an 18 month contract and the need to make 10 chargeable OR INCLUSIVE calls per month).
If you're not likely to be moving within 18 months, the first condition is no problem and, as the 10 calls can be inclusibve ones (e.g. to any 01 or 02 number at the weekend), there's no cost-penalty there - it's only a question of remembering to make them.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

No you cant use another ISP on VM cable phone.
If you were in a VM cable area, no need for a phone line as they can deliver broadband only. Non cable landline suppliers cant.0 -

I moved house at the beginning of the month and was just automatically offered free installation at the new place with only a 12 month contract.Any question, comment or opinion is not intended to be criticism of anyone else.2 Samuel 12:23 Romans 8:28 Psalm 30:5

You would normally do if the line and socket at the new address were still in situ between your house and the exchange, and had not been disconnected in anyway.

Hi All
Can Anyone Help???
I moved into a new property which already had a BT box in it, I rang BT and asked if they could connect me and was told I would incur this ridiculous charge for an engineer having to come out (which they didnt). Apparently they only had to go to the local junction box!!!
I agreed to make monthly direct debit payments for £17 until this charge was paid off - which was fine until I got my first quarterley bill and then the payments shot up to £35!
BT said this was because I had gone over the credit limit they give to new customers!! Well surley they knew this would happen when they happily agreed to take my £17 a month -they just didnt bother to tell me about this!!
I cancelled my previous contract with BT in Dec 08 and didnt ask for reconnection till Mar 09.
Is there anything I can do to either reduce these payments or have the connection fee removed?
Im prepared for the worst - as that is what service BT usually offer, but if any kind soul out there knows a way round this I would really appreciate your feedback.
Many Thanks for readin0 -
:money:D man at BT says, NO, D man at Moneysavingexpert.com is wrong. D offer does not apply, spent 20 mins talking to D man at BT, his name D boss that makes D arrangements for new lines. Will be having a new Virgin (line) tomorrow. Don't tell Sid about D offer, he will also be turned down. Taffthetip.0

Im STILL sat awaiting a reply from ANY BTrep regarding my post #189 !!!!
Possibly im invisible (not possible) or they cannot work out the extreme charge levied by openreach either from my supplied photos.
I spoke to my neighbour yesterday and explained openreaches impossible quote, they told me that two years ago, they had a BT line put in and cost £124.00. Their new line had to come 50 meters, have a channel dug across a single lane road (and refilled) and then be connected inside their home. Their £124.00 charge included EVERYTHING!!
So, now a much simpler job is charged at £500???? No it isnt worth anywhere near that amount, but thats what they HOPE they will get by making the most of a closed shop regarding line installation before Sky start their own in the future.0 -
Just phoned bt as i ordered a line and broadband last week and was told at the time that there was nothing they could do regarding the £122 fee,
after seeing this thread i called them back and the guy i spoke to seemed surprised that they had not offered the free connection to me. he said i will need to cancel and reorder in 24 hours though
i advised i did not think this was the case and that having looked on this site some people were not having to cancel and reorder
he went away and checked with customer options who have corrected him and this has now been sorted
£122 saved and i am not having to wait any longer :j"The darkness has no answers"0
