Thanks showergirl. You have enough to deal with and this is minor compared. Its just me I guess being over anxious. It was just that she is anemic, I know that but not iron deficiency anemia so must be something else. I was just annoyed to read that overloading iron when someone is not needing it can be so damaging. I have calmed now...:o:o

You are bound to be anxious when you receive news like this.
I hope everything works out for you.

Take care and let us know how you get on
  • I posted my first letter off to the Halifax last week to reclaim my credit card PPI dating back to 2003. Received what looks like a standard letter back today saying they are looking at my complaint and have up to 8wks to respond to me.

What experience do people have in dealing with Halifax? Did you also receive this standard response and how long after that did it take to be resolved fully? I was slightly concerned yesterday after the ruling on bank charges but am I right in thinking this has no effect on PPI claims? Thanks all!

    Hi there
If you can also check on the Success thread as well, its a long thread though lol :D
Yes that is correct of 8 weeks, yet if you hear nothing then, your entitled to take your complaint to the FOS.

I was successful through the ombudsman (FOS) with a credit card ppi reclaim as from a 2001 case (lloyds), as the banks are covered for these complaints anyway and the FOS will investigate.

I should not think the ruling of the charges is anything to do with PPI reclaiming, so no worries there.;)

That to what I know of is a standard response, but hope you hear soon with some good news, good luck.

Thanks for the encouraging news there - and apologies for posting this in the wrong thread (oops!)

I successfully reclaimed my bank charges a while back by using this site and received my money the very day before they put all claims on hold. I thought I may have missed the boat this time with the PPI claim but it looks like I'm in with a shout :D

My daughter has just been diagnosed "anemic" and been given iron tabs BUT her ferritin levels are normal, its actually her hemoglobin that is low....She has to to see a specialist in December but I cannot understand why they would do this. I emailed the American Society of Blood disorders and got this reply

    Dear Karen,
Thank you for contacting the American Society for Clinical Laboratory
Science (ASCLS). You are correct that a person does not need iron if ferritin levels are normal. ferritin is the storage form of iron. Because of the nose bleed and petechiae, I am thinking of a hemostasis problem. This may or may not be related to the low hemoglobin. I would ask that she be screened for basic coag tests, PT, PTT, Fibrinogen and also have a platelet function test done (whether bleeding time or other). A condition that is often overlooked in women is vonWillebrand''s disease. Some testing should help rule this out.

Again, thank you for using the ASCLS Consumer Information Web Page. As a
member of this profession, I am pleased to represent clinical laboratory
scientists who perform millions of laboratory tests yearly. The clinical
laboratory is composed of several sub-specialty areas: Chemistry,
Hematology, Immunology, Microbiology, and Transfusion services and
provides over 70% of the objective data that physicians need for
    accurate diagnosis and treatment.

    Also it says here

Hemoglobin is not iron! Unfortunately physicians prescribe iron to anemic people who test with low hemoglobin. Yes, the patients are anemic, but the iron is collecting in storage instead of going into hemoglobin. These people are iron-loaded. They need iron removed despite the anemia. The anemia should be treated with B vitamins, especially B12, B6 and folic acid. Many patients with anemia are dying of iron overload, and some are hastened to their death by their physicians who give iron. Blood banks seem to believe that hemoglobin and iron are the same. They have prepared lists of high iron foods to give out to donors with low hemoglobin. They invariably tell these people: "Your iron is low." Dangerous misinformation.

Would you take her off the iron tabs from this information. It was only monday evening she started them and it was friday she was seen at the docs for petechia and first nose bleed. This has been ongoing since she was 3. I don't know how to tell my doctor tomorrow as I am getting a telephone consultation that I have found that they have treated her wrong... I trust the blood specialists more than a general GP :confused::confused:

    Just found this too.

The other thing to note is that hemoglobin is not iron! Yes, you are anemic if your hemoglobin is low but that does not necessarily mean your iron is low. Indeed, what might be happening is that the iron is collecting in storage instead of going into hemoglobin. You are actually iron-loaded and need iron removed despite the anemia. The anemia should be treated with B vitamins, especially B12, B6 and folic acid. Many patients with anemia are dying of iron overload, and some are hastened to their death by their physicians who give them more iron.

Even a small amount of excess iron can damage heart and brain and other storage sites in the body and lead to heart attack or stroke. There is exaggerated concern when hemoglobin falls temporarily, following surgery, for example. Blood transfusions are over-used. A study shows that surgery patients who do not receive transfusions survive better than those who do.1

Hi marshallka, sorry to hear you are so worried about your daughter. Hope she will be sorted soon.
don't know much about this only that I have pernicious anemia and have B12 injection every 3 months. Folic Acid one a week. Appararantley with PA something to do with the stomach lining does not absorb B12 and this is why it has to be supplemented.
I d get very tired when I am due for a jab, but other than that not too much of a problem really.

As for discussing it with your GP.I would say always trust your instinct, and don't leave anything to chance. esp were your kids are concerned.

I have read the info you received and thought it was rather indepth for a lay person like ourselves. I also think they have given the worse case scenario.
I think this info will make you worry, more than is really necessary.

Good luck and I hope you get it sorted soon. The most important thing is you are on the case, and you being you will not let it go until you get it sorted.

Marshallka, when the GP received the results of the Blood test, im sure there are several factors he has too look at, at there are so many different levels of this and that, that are tested within the same test, if you follow me.
    Hope wverything works out ok.
