I guess the people that fear the most the influx of immigrants are those with poor qualification or no qualification at all and sure enough they should be fearful as there are more competition for the same jobs (in many cases). I don't think there are much people can do though apart maybe from voting for BNP and wishing they pull the UK out of the european union. Actually there is one other thing people can do and that's getting better qualification.

You think so? Personally, I don't think people with poor qualifications need to worry all that much, there will always be work for people working minimum wage. I think the people with the good qualifications who need to worry. China has millions of new graduates every year who are prepared to work for a tenth of what a UK graduate makes. And china's education is superior in a number of fields to UK education.

Yet another thread of boring racist carp?

This thread is essentially more nationalistic than racist. I presume the OP intended it to descend into a slanging match of some description and has only chosen to respond to points that only agree with him instead of engaging in a truly open debate with good points brought up by other posters. Clearly, the OP has not made the clear distinction of what type of migrants he despises but rather all migrants are the same in his book, they should all leave this country that doesn't belong to them.

Controled immigration isn't necessarily racist, or even nationalist. Every nation has limited resources, and need to try to get the best mix of immigration to boost the quality of life of existing citizens and to insure those immigrants let in have all the help needed to integrate well into the existing society.

What does tend toward the racist is the idea that all immigrants are a bad thing. In general, with demographics of the UK leading to an ageing population, immigration is a good thing. There is a lot of competition amoungst leading industrial countries to get the best immigrants.

Of course, we are in a recession, and so there is less need of foreign workers. In the longer term, the recession will end. At that point, immigration will become necessary again.

  • immigration has been necessary in all western countries due to changing demographics as our population ages. aren't enough young people to pay for the increasing numbers of pensionsers imo (given that capitalism also needs a pool of unemployed to reduce wage demands and weaken labour power)

I'll say to you what I say to any other bigot imbecile out there: you personally make sure that every single briton from abroad comes home. All the 6 million of them, from Spain, Italy, France, USA, Australia, New Zeeland etc Once we counted them and they are all here, I will personally make sure every single foreign citizen from UK goes back to his home. And that includes Madonna (USA), all the foreign football players (yes they are foreign workers too), all the American investors in the City, all the Japanese magnates, all the rich residents in London etc etc etc Deal? No, I didn't think so. What you want is limitation on one side without reciprocation: poor people in searc of a better life should be kept at the gate, on the other hand rich people should be allowed in. Also britons should be allowed to enter freely any other country, for work or tourism. Only the uneducated ignorant descendant of an Empire who abused other nations could think like that.

I think they are still living in a bygone era, the days of General Wolfe and Robert Clive. The irony is the average British citizen was treated as little more than a slave in those days anyway :D

I think you will find that they don't mind the South Africans etc of a certain colour (they will be our boys :D).

Its hard to convince 16 year olds to do Science or Maths A levels when they have spend most of their school career developing a deep hatred for these subjects.

If only they knew what an amazing career they miss out on by having this attitude.

I can't understand why this is...I know it happens as parents are often complaining about the problems their children are having especially in maths.

I love maths, working with numbers etc - and so do all my children!

Eldest son is currently doing GCSE Triple science, middle son has been earmarked to start a GCSE Triple Science next year (he is only year 7 currently!) and youngest is at GCSE level maths and he is only year 6.

As a family, we just can't understand why people are not interested in these subjects....they are just so interesting.

As for the question in the opening post, well as far as I am concerned, we are all the same and should have the same chances...no matter where we come from.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.

Um, could it be because the subjects are notoriously hard to teach?

    here's a question for you:

    We know 2 + 2 = 4.

But why does it = 4, why not 3, or 5?

Our Housing association had opposite problem, took on polish/ukraine teams for large contract. complete and utter disaster, arrived late, left early and caused so much structural damage that the the works project is now six months behind schedule. HA now has nightmare of trying to take on new contactors (we tenants have asked for local workers that were laid off from local firms- including my son in law who contrary to myth did not earn a fortune) while trying to prove the foreign contractors are being justifiably replaced. I don't feel any sympathy for the HA as it had been their decision to take on a cheaper contract instead of retaining workers in our (Several) towns. Local jobs for local people when there is no reason for shipping in shoddy labour.

This is simply a problem with the tendering process. It's very easy to disqualify 'shoddy foreign labour' by simply requiring a proven track record. I wouldn't be surprised if the HA simply tendered the work on a 'lowest cost wins' basis - and in which case, they deserve all they get.

As for the 'local work for local people' - well, if you want to pay higher rent/administration charges, it's your choice. I suspect you'd be the first to complain when your rent went up by 10 pounds a week just to keep overpaid, spoilt British workers in jobs. As for the tenants asking for local workers - well, typical British racism isn't it?

I would also be interested to know how Ukrainian nationals got a work permit to work in the UK - or was this simply idle gossip spread by people with right wing tendancies? As far as I'm aware, it's virtually impossible for low/unskilled CIS nationals to gain a UK work permit. It was certainly tough enough for me pre-2004 to gain one.
