  • Ah well thanks anyway mate, thought it best to ask as I never know if I'm being a tool with being new.

    Cheers
  • I checked out various guitar tuition DVDs, books, software etc. There's a guy selling cd-roms and dvd-roms on ebay that looks pretty good. The lessons are divided into months so the whole course could take you two years - it seems pretty comprehensive though. The best bit is you can download the first month for FREE!

As an example, disc one of the cd-roms include the following -
    • 12+ printable e-books,
with guitar lessons and exercises in PDF format.
    • 48 interactive guitar lessons,
with lessons and exercises on your CD
    • You can hear the lessons and exercises played (NEW)
    • Backing tracks
play along with or help you with tunes you don't know
    • 12 video guitar lesson
to give you a visual aid to overcome common problems
    • a metronome
to help yo get used to playing in correct time
    • a guitar tuner
so you can develop an ear for the guitar
    • a backing player
so can listen to the backing directly from the program
    • interactive chord and scale charts
so you can hear how the chords/scales should sound
    • games to help develop your guitar skills
you can learn to tune your guitar with a game

Check out his ebay page here or website http://www.guitar-academy.com/
You can also download just the 24 e-books for 3 quid!

No, I'm not affiliated to this guy - just think he's helped me along the way to getting to grips with my new hobby!

I would be a little wary of learning from books, I tried before and its alot harder when you can't see another person physically playing the same like you can on a DVD (and its a little too cold and clinical for my personal liking). I'm not saying the above package is no good, just pointing out that in my opinion its easier, and more fun, to learn from a good DVD (maybe using books to help along the way).
  • Don't like to gloat (well actually....) but a couple of days ago I went to order a guitar stand, put guitar in the search and found that they also had an "open box" blue guitar kit for £26.13 + VAT. Just received it today and apart from a couple of tiny scratches on the scratch plate, it is perfect.

Many thanks to the original poster because if I hadn't known about the cheap guitar stand, I wouldn't have done the search.

My son will be well impressed.

Once you've got the hang of playing a few chords and so on, check out some of the tablature sites on the net. Start with Olga which is the OnLine Guitar Archive.

On here you'll find free tabs for most things you can think of. They're not usually 100% accurate, but at least it's a free way of learning the main riffs from your favourite songs.

If you like rock music, anything by AC/DC is pretty easy to get to grips with!

    HEEEELP!!!

My tremolo/whammy bar has snapped. It got stuck and I couldn't tighten or loosen it and while trying to force it loose it has sheared off leaving the thread end in the screwhole. Two questions:

How do I get the thread out?

And will a Fender Strat arm fit the hole or will I need the exact right arm for the guitar?

    Please help :(

Is mine faulty? It just arrived today.

I switched the amp on and it started humming loudly. Nothing plugged in.

I've screwed in the tremolo arm in, plugged the cord into the guitar and into the Input socket on the amp. But all I'm getting is that humming noise.

I tried plugging the guitar into the Phone socket on the amp. That stopped the humming but I'm still getting no sound.

    Any idea's anyone?

The Phone socket is an output for headphones and not an input so that just silences the hum. And yes it's probably faulty but it could be just a dodgy lead if the hum goes away when you unplug it from the amp.
