You could cut out th dish washer tablets by using washing soda, does the same job and keeps your pipes clean.

I had an Idesit washing machine which conked after 11 years, when the chap came to it, he could not believe that there was no limescalein the drum or the pipes, why?? becuase I used half a cup of washing soda and half a cup of Tesco really cheapie washing powder per load, my whites are as white as the driven snow . It works just the same in a dish washer. In fact before the advent of washing up liquid its what we used to wash the pots with along with some green fairy soap swished in the water, kills grease just looking at it......and you can use vinegar to rinse with..........instead of rinse aid....

How about you make a deal with your OH that for the next two weeks, you'll load and run the dishwasher and he'll empty it, and that at some point in the next two weeks, you'll run it with only half a tablet, and if he can tell when you did it, he wins...er, I mean, you'll agree to use a whole tablet?
  • We have a full size dishwasher and i only put in half a tablet too

It the dishes are clean when you use half a tablet, then why not continue to do so?

When we were on holiday, the rented place had a dishwasher but we couldn't find any tablets. We ran it without any tablets, and the dishes seemed clean afterwards. There was no baked on stains, as I was only cooking light meals, but was interesting.

    Hi Primrose,

Old Stylers have been cutting their diswasher tablets in half for ages for full size dishwashers so there shouldn't be any problem using half a tablet in your machine. I've added this to the main thread on dishwasher tablets so you can see what others do.

  • Hi

I have a slimline a rated bosch dishwasher. I use the t value tablets. Will it clean as well if i cut them in half or is it only expensive branded tablets you do this for? Also how do you cut them without the powder going everywhere :)

I'm a big fan of using half a tab but find after a while some stains build up, especially in the tea and coffee pot, so on Sundays I use a full tab which keeps things tickerty boo. My DW goes on twice a day but I only buy DW tabs once every six weeks:T

  • I use the Lidl w5 Tablets (the one that got Which Best buy). Finish rinse aid and any salt.

    Excellent results.

The cheaper tablets (eg lidl) will snap in half without any problems. The more expensive ones (eg five in 1) are a nightmare to cut and exactly what you say happens. So I use lidl and break it in half with my hands before opening the little plastic package so that any dust stays in the package...
  • Even easier - use DW Powder instead of tablets! It's simple to put in half the recommended dose and no fiddly breaking up of tablets to do. It also seems to work out cheaper wash-for-wash than tablets anyway.
