A fairly recent breast cancer survey in the UK found that sufferers fell into one of 4 categories.
One group went into denial even thinking a mastectomy was just a precaution.
Another group decided to fight it with every means possible even if that meant a visit to w witch doctor.
Another group just accepted it and basicaly did as they were told by the doctor
And the final group just fell apart mentaly and in effect went into panick mode over the fact they would probably die.

Now my question is do you fall into any of these groups with depression and if so which one.
There were substantial differences in the life expectancy and recovery rates of the four groups but Im not going to give the answers just yet as to which group fared best.

As far as depression is concerned I did the above for years until eventually falling into the "Another group just accepted it and basically did as they were told by the doctor"

One thing that really helps me is my dogs. They give me such affection and don't expect anything from me. From their point of view it is a bonus that I feed them every day and take them for walks but if I stopped doing this they would still love me!:p

    Hi everyone
I fight any illness I get with everything possible. Even a cold gets bombarded with all sorts of cures. A good excuse to drink lots of hot whiskey as well:rotfl: I believe in giving my immune system as much help as possible.
Flames in the Garden of Eden
Heaven in pieces at my feet
    I faced the raging ruins
    Of a million sleepless nights
I need to rest my weary head
    On your resurrection bed.

i used to try and fight depression by any means possible, to some extent i still do, last year on another thread somebody suggested taking vit d, so i did, but overall, after 15+ years of suffering, i usually just accept it now, and do as i'm told by the doctor

I don't think you can really compare brest cancer and depression, therefore the results of the above survey would be meaningless for depression.

However it is a good question about how we cope with depression and again there in no right or wrong answer, it all depends on the individuel and at what stage they are in their depression.

For me first and foremost it's very important to follow the advice of my doctor, then whatever other means you hear about from friends, internet etc but only if you feel comforable with them. I also went through stages of compelete denial and the worst, thoughts of ending it all.

I can:D. Im not comparing the illnesses although I could but the results were interesting from a point of view that I think could help depression sufferers.

Yes there are no right or wrong answers but there may be a useful lesson in the way conditions can be fought by the body whether they be mental or physical conditions. Whilst I agree with you in the follow doctors advice bit it is interesting to note that in that survey the ones who just did as they were told by the doc didnt come top of the survival rates and actually were in the bottom two.
As you know this thread is for those who wish to look at ways of improving life and I think this survey shows it is possible if you have the right tools and knowledge. as far as I am concerned life is too short to live with depression all the time though (before I get shot to bits) I do realise some people because of their situation cant get away from it. However that doesnt mean one shouldnt have a go at lessening the effects as much as possible.

So are you feeling unloved or unappreciated by family and friends?
