I am visiting Costco tomorrow with a view to joining does anyone know if you can pay with a credit card?0
-
From costco website:
How do I pay?
We accept payment in cash, cheques and Delta / Switch cards.0 -
Credit Cards can be as high as 3%.
Costco would not pay anything like that charge if they were to accept credit cards. It would be a fraction of a percent. However they appear to be doing all right with the currently accepted forms of payment so, as you say, there is no need for them to increase their payment processing costs.0 -
It's true that Costco could probably agree a decent rate with each card company, they have done this with Amex in the US and Japan, and the new Australia branches accept Visa, Mastercard and Amex. Maybe it's a case of never accepting them in the UK now because accepting them at any transaction rate is just added cost.
Also not only is it inconvenient but if you're buying a big expensive item (there seem to be a lot at Costco), you can't buy it with a credit card and therefore be covered under the Consumer Credit Act(s).
I don't think it would be an issue with potential refunds under the Consumer Credit Act because Costco have a very good returns policy (though this is not as good as it used to be). As an American company they have carried over that philosophy to this country at least. Not sure of the fine print, but I did notice that all TVs have a 5 yr guarantee included in the purchase price. We bought a printer that conked out after 1 year and 1 month, returned it and money refunded with no questions asked (and the price of an equivalent printer had dropped by this point so we were actually in profit!). I have heard of other similar cases - though the right to return is no longer indefinate as it seemed to be. We also did not need to produce a receipt as the purchase showed up on our customer account.0 -
Costco's Return policy in the UK is that
TV's, Computers, Cameras, Camcorders. Have a 90 Day return window from Purchase (Plenty of time if you need a decent camera/camcorder for your Holidays!), after that its manufacturers repair/replace. TVs come with a 5 year Repair Replace Warranty, PCs and Camcorders 2 Year.
Its to stop the I will upgrade my PC by taking it back to Costco after 3 years syndrome that was happening a lot.
ALL OTHER ITEMS Still come under the As long as you are a member it can be returned policy. So if you are a member 20 years down the line you can still return the item
Longest return I know of was a Bunk Bed returned after 10 years as due to a house move it no longer fitted in the new house. refunded Cash no quibbles.
Household Applicance like Washing Machines, Fridges etc, do not fall under the 90 day policy yet, so buying from Costco efectivley gives you a product with a lifetime guarantee.Over 100k miles of Electric Motoring and rising,0
