Hi Rebe
I really empathise with you. I don't think you were unreasonable to ask to extend your holiday (especially over 2 months before you were due to go). And no employer should threaten redundancy over something as minor as an employee's hair. Your employer sounds like an insecure, sad little man who needs to bully employees to make him feel important. I wish you the very best of luck in finding another job very very soon, then you can resign. I've had my share of awful bosses, and the day you get shot of them is a very good day! Please don't let this man make your working life a misery, no-one deserves that. Keep you chin up, and let us know how you get on.
Thank you, will let you know when things change. Currently thinking of ways to put the ball back in his court without giving him reason to be an !!!!, again. x0 -
Hey Rebe
Don't get stressed out about the responses on here. This is just a place where anyone who's been and bought a computer can type anything into it without having to think. The Internet didn't used to be like this, and MSE certainly didn't used to be like it either.
In summary, you've got a good mix of views here. Some from the left and some from the right. What you need to do now is to consider what you want to do, and how it's going to affect you.
Don't leave though.. At worst get them to sack you or make you 'redundant'. Then you can walk straight into the Job Centre. Not a nice thought I know, but if you leave then it'll cause no end of problems. It's always more satisfying to get the sack btw.Leaving leaves you with a bit of an empty feeling of having failed.
I hope it works out.And it will. In some ways this is all experience. We've all been through it. (well, some of us have, those who've seen a bit of the world anyway).
Chin up. xx0 -
Hey ts_aly2000
The majority of advice has been supportive and informative, so thank you to everyone who helped me on here.
I've never been sacked from a job, so the thought is odd, but first time for everything I suppose. I think i'm going to find it hard to be sacked because it leaves him stuck with no-one to do my job, even if its for a day or 2 and he's not stupid, inconsiderate but unfortunately not stupid.
Thanks rs_aly200 xx0 -
Hello Rebe
I hope things get better for you, and I know it's hard but try not to let some of the posts get you down.. I'm sure you don't need to deal with these posts on top of everything else going on right now. You've had some good advise here, and I hope it helps.
I would advise that you keep a diary as some have suggested as that could prove invaluable.
I've not worked in an environment where it's husband and wife as my managers therefore I can't imagine what it's like for you, but I have encountered terrible managers before that lack certain people skills and are just out for themselves so I can empathise.. Blimey - you only have to watch the Apprentice sometimes to see the characters you might come across!
How does your holiday stand right now, has this been "approved"? I really hope all gets sorted... best of luck..This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Look, this thread is turning into another 'he said', she said, debacle.
The bottom line is unless you work for a large organisation with big HR dept, possibilities of a sideways move to another area/dept etc etc then there are only three choices when working for a very small company with a boss who you believe is a bully and who you do not get on with:
1. Resign and get another job (or preferably the other way round!)
2. Accept it and keep your head down and have a miserable working life
3. stand up to it, either face to face or through tribunal etc and accept a very uncomfortable working relationship with your employer in the future
The way I see it, it's really as simple as that, it's the OP's call.

Heyat the moment I have not mentioned anything about it as i've not seen him since lunch time yesterday. Will be asking him on Monday which 2 weeks would be "convenient" for him for me to take and see how it goes.
Didn't mean to rant at people, just cant stand it when people pass judgement when it wasn't what was asked of them

One thing, will you have accrued enough holiday by June to cover both weeks? Wondering if that is the reason the request was turned down, but it got lost in communication. Have you much other holiday booked, or have you used a lot of your entitlement for the year?Stay-at-home, attached Mummy to a 23lb 10oz, 11 month old baby boy.0

I worked it out and yes i've accrued enough days. Haven't got any other holiday booked, rarely take days off work to be honest, so far only had one day off for my OH's birthday.0

Ok it may be unpleasant but not everyone will have a good boss, you need to get on with it and do your job.
Holiday entitlement is an entitlement, but that doesnt give you the right to dictate when you are taking it and you have no reason to feel aggrieved that your employers were annoyed at you trying to do so.
If the OP had a contract which had clearly stated the practice policy on leave, notice required etc then that's fair enough.
Everyone needs to exactly what the terms are, if a dentist can decide on the spot then it's not good enough.
and as for the good boss/bad boss thing NOBODY has the right to make a colleague feel that way at work, I don't care who they are.
I've worked in dentistry for a long enough time (19 years) to know what some dentists are like unfortunately!
...Linda xxIt's easy to give in to that negative voice that chants "cant do it" BUT we lift each other up.
We dont count all the runners ahead of us & feel intimidated.
Instead we look back proudly at our journey, our personal struggle & determination & remember that there are those that never even attempt to reach the starting line.0 -

Hey Rebe - You have no reason to apologise, if you're having a tough time it's ok to get upset now and again - alot of people would have reacted the same way to some of the comments.. Good luck with things, hopefuly you'll think about looking for another job..
I saw a post where someone said it'll be hard doing anything working for small employer but he/she is making you carry out work which isn't legal - that's worth keeping bullet point notes on just in case anything happens in the future..
It's a job and most of us need one but please try not to let it get you down - just think of the wages and try to think of more positive things outside of work... hope you're feeling much better about things and enjoy your weekendThis is a system account and does not represent a real person.
