I agree that you should always arrange leave before booking a holiday, but in this case it was the OP's mother who booked the holiday, as a surprise!

In my opinion, any understanding boss would have a bit of sympathy and try get the OP the time off. If there was just no way, fair enough. There's no need for rudeness, degrading comments or anything else that makes an employee feel so unhappy. Being 'the manager' doesn't mean you have free reign to treat people badly. In fact, good management skills include dealing with people in a reasonable manner, and if the OP's boss can't do this he shouldn't be in management!

It shocks me how many people have such awful bosses. I've had a few pretty terrible ones myself - they just drive good people away from their company. It can be avoided so easily, if only the right people were given management positions!

Some people need to grow up.

Again, thats not constructive, I really would rather you didn't just come and talk down to me as if I was a school child.

If you're going to criticise, fine, but do so in a constructive, more sensitive manner.

What a ridiculous statement to make.
For a start, you are tellig the OP she is the best employee they are likely to get. No offence OP, but employing good people at the moment is very very easy.

Regardless of whether her bosses are nice or nasty, doesnt disuade from the fact they are running a business.....not a charity.

People cannot be allowed to just upsticks and take holidays without their bosses sanctioning it. If that was the case then business would be in a worse state than it is now.

This scenario is SO simple a child could understand it!

    1. Book leave
    2. Book the holiday

Not the other way around. How complicated is that?

Business? It's a Dentist's Practice for Goodness Sake, not a nuclear power station. All someone has to do is sit on their backside, take money, and book appointments.

They're being difficult! Holiday is ALWAYS inconvenient to Managers, as they'd prefer that everyone work 60-hours a week for nothing. If it's that much of a problem then they should get a temp in to cover the holiday.

The business is inflexible and is being treated as personal. Husband, wife. Businesses have costs, this is one of them. Get used to it.

It may well be inconvenient however maybe they already had granted other staff time off leaving no one to cover.

I.e Dental nurses were rota'd to cover the one week but cant the 2nd.

As for the OP you are a child, at the end of the day you started crying because you were in the wrong hoping it would influence them.

If they dont want to give you the holiday well you will either need to resign or cancel.

Any reasonable business has the holiday dates of EVERYONE on a notice board somewhere. We do. I've encountered these daft businesses before though which treat it as some kind of highly guarded secret.

In which case the OP would know not to even ask. Alternatively she would make arrangements with another member of staff to swap. We just let everyone fight it out amongst themselves, so long as we have the required cover to keep it going. We're not running a concentration camp!

There's ALOT of criticism of the OP going on here, and from people who frankly I don't like the sound of. I couldn't work to your restrictive and controlled lifestyle. You've been brainwashed to conform.

Businesses are there for people, to make money, and to provide a living for those who work for them. And then you get egos and control freaks who think that it's something other than that.

Businesses are going to the wall left right and centre. A Dentist's is not going to go to the wall.

OP. Is this a private or NHS Dentist we're talking about?
  • This is how any reasonable company works.

Staff ask for holidays, and staff are granted holidays, staff do not dictate when they are taking holidays.

There could be any number of reasons she can't get the 2nd week off, and even if there isnt maybe they just want to show her who the boss is.

If she doesnt like it resign.

How dare you come on here and judge me, really who the hell do you think you are!
I started crying because I'm under pressure of bankruptcy that my partner is going through, how his work pans out because its touch and go if he works from week to week, pressure my partner also has from the CSA, keeping our heads above water, a family member who could drop dead any day now, and crap from work over stupid things that I really don't need.

I'm not the sort to influence people emotionally, that is just petty. You really have no right to come and judge me.

Your work pay you to do a job. At the end of the day your personal problems are just that.

I suspect your employers really could do without having to deal with your demands and attitude because you are demanding a holiday they dont want to give.
