While I agree that one has to give notice re holidays, the OP has given over 2 months notice (depending when in June she is travelling). There is more than enough time to arrange cover for her.

As bosses one would surely realise your staff have to take holiday during the year and make allowances for that. The boss should exercise forward planning.

Clearly this 'boss' is on a power trip. Instead of being happy for his employee, he is acting like a snot. It isn't a trip she organised herself, it was a suprise. They could easily take that into consideration.

With bosses like this is it any wonder that more workers are suffering from depression or aren't loyal?

It is give and take in an employer/employee relationship. Treat your staff well people. They are not your boxing bag to take your stress out on.

A company does not have to give reason for refusing a holiday request and is with it's rights to do so, however if the request is refused, then they should tell you when you can take time off specified instead. Perhaps the appointment book is full during those two weeks and if he was to have a temp in he would schedule a lighter work load in order to maintain standards? That would indeed be "making provision"

Ok he shouldn't have mentioned redundancy, but if he thought your hair was untidy and particularly as you are the first person his customers see when they walk in, then he is within his rights to have a quiet word about your appearance.

Sounds similar to a situation I was in last year...

My bosses were awful with me from day one. They forgot I was starting, didn't have a PC for me and no log in. I was put on a desk away from the team by myself. I had to get that all myself in my first week. They never gave me any work and were annoyed when I asked if I could help with anything. They were always annoyed when I requested holiday days. They made comments about the way I look saying they had noticed men looking at me and I should re-consider the way I look...I'm just a petitie blonde...! They accused me of lying about being ill even though I had a doctors note. They told me I had to work while I was ill at home. They denied holidays. I found another job and handed my notice in, it got worse. HR found out and were concerned about my health, my Dr said I had signs of stress and signed me off work before I was supposed to leave.

After that long story...! GET OUT OF THERE! Please don't make you feel like this, no one has the right to make you feel so sad.

I perfectly understand presentation and looking "tidy" but his approach is all wrong. I totally agree with Snowmaid on all of this, I get up in the morning and now dread coming to work.
Like Sazzyukrafc - he bought and provided uniform, but then when he caught men looking at me, told me it was my fault and told me I had to go out and buy something more suitable.

So basically the recorder is a no go? I date, time and log everything that goes on but it seems that till i've been here a year its useless anyway?

Sazzyukrafc, wish I could just no come back on Monday, however, jobs are limited and I cant take the risk of being unemployed for to long. Been to my DR who also said she would sign me off for stress/sick but I don't want to make things worse than they already are and not sure i'd get enough money doing it :(

    have you joined an union?

I would imagine that a number of unions, GMB and Unison for example will be suitable for your job.

If so just join and dont go into any issues with the union yet, I think further issues will occur after you`ve joined the union , at which point your union membership becomes very valuable

the recorder can be useful in recording the details . You can then use it to write a verbatim transcript.

once someone suspects you have recorded them by you providing a transcript at an appropriate moment, they will probably become concerned about unreasonable behaviour on other occassions that you may also have recorded.

this shifts the balance of power in this situation.

Exactly this. When working in offices I have very rarely been given the leave time I requested and have at times had agreed holiday time moved by management.

    Rebe I have PM'd you!!!!

I am a dental nurse myself and an adviser to my PCT, I will help if I can.
As part of clinical governance he should have contracts which state exactly how much notice should be given for leave etc.

Yes, exactly the same. I would come to work in black/grey work trousers and a jumper...my boss would tell me men are always looking at me and maybe I should change how I look and my hair colour!!!

It sounds like your manager's are the same as mine were, completely power mad. To my liking, HR knew there were problems with bullying in my department and it turned out they'd been doing the same to other young employees......they were told they had to go on manager courses and I believe one of them has now left, hopefully not to continue being nasty to other people.

I would suggest looking for another job now. Please try and get out of there as soon as you can. In my job I was made ill and my Dr was very worried about my health. I wasn't sleeping, crying everyday, not eating, feeling weak, getting headaches and generally feeling !!!!!.

Please don't go how I did, the day you walk out of there you will feel a massive weight off your shoulders :D

I just can't be doing with this anymore. I rarely sleep, have constant headaches and am rarely hungry (not looking for sympathy from anyone) but until I find another job i'm stuck working for this man feeling like this day in day out!!

Cant wait till the day I leave, I'l know I'll feel such relief.
