Would you say anything about lodgers excessive use of washing machine?

Get a drying horse thing for their bedroom - instruct them that's where their towel goes. Tell them they can have a clean one after a few uses. They'll soon get the hang of it.0

I would rather wash towels than have bedrooms resembling utility rooms with airers. They have their own shower room too,and a stack of towels to go through. I think it is that we have always had clean towels every day,and it is no effort to put the washing machine on....it is not like I am washing them by hand!! Mine are back and forth from Uni,like a revolving door!!(I have 4)so we do still use a lot of water.0

Hi,
I had a lodger move in just under one month ago. She uses the washing machine EIGHT times per week! Yes that's right, she does bed sheets every other day, colored lingerie, white lingerie, towels etc. Whilst living with a clean freak certainly has it's advanages, I get a bit frustrated as she only ever 1/4 loads the machine. It is hugely inefficient and I worry the machine will break with such excessive light loads. We share bills so I don't consider it my place to say don't wash your clothes so often. But what would you do? Would you say anything about filling the machine up a bit more or not say anything at all?

I haven't read the whole thread so sorry if someone has already suggested this, but why don't you suggest that you do your washing together? So when she's only putting a small amount of stuff in you could add some of yours. I know it wouldn't solve the problem completely, she would still be doing eight washes a week (which is hugely excessive imo) but at least you would save on the washes that you would be doing.0 -

Maybe she has a masturbating problem, think it can contribute to dirty sheets ie excessive sweating from anal area although i am no expert.0 -
I like that this post has gone from a lodger problem, to a 'how anally clean are you and your family'.. he he
my 2p, me and the missus do normally 2 loads a week, sometimes just 1.
My policy is: if it smells, wash it, otherwise wear it again! (the missus may diagree with this...)
Socks = 1 day
shirts = 2 days (unless summer, then 1 day)
trousers = 1 week
jeans - up to a month depending on what I'm doing
sheets = 1 month if I remember, so sometimes up to 2
towels = when they smell, generally around 2-3 weeks.
As i wear separate clothes for work/home, home clothes can last longer as they're only on for 4 hours a day.
My mum tought me to use a flannel after showering to wipe myself down of the worst wetness. Makes the towels last a lot longer :-)
Mind you, I did put an energy meter on the washing machine, and it uses 0.8 units for a normal load at 40deg. That's not that bad I thought.0 -
Hi, hope i can help.
I have had lodgers for 3 years now, some good, some not so good, some clean some not so clean hehe
all of them seem to be reluctant washing bedlinen!
So what we do:
I have a rota for the washing machine, so we have days each giving time for drying in between, this only gives 2 days a week each to do washing.
I encourage and recomend the 35degree quick wash ( i use for everything but bedlinen)
offer to wash things together, only with current lodger as she is cleaner than the last one!hehe to make up a load
advice use of time saver/ mini load button as quicker and better for the environment.
I would recomend highlighting the rota issue otherwise u might find that you never get to use the machine & also the environmental issues.
Its not easy having a lodger so unless people understand/ have them. I am forever turning off left on lights etc because some people just dont think.
However i am fortunate because last few have been good and mostly stay in there rooms so no issues with privacy etc
hope that helps:T0
