Would you say anything about lodgers excessive use of washing machine?

Many newer washing machines only use the water needed for the load. Ours is like this and you could put one item in and it will use far less water. However, you do need to put far less detergent in and it's hard to calculate so much easier to do a full load!
It also does a quick wash for items that are not dirty but just need freshening up. Takes less than 30 minutes and uses less water and energy.
However, I don't think this is the only issue here. Presumably there is constantly wet washing hanging around the house (even if only in her room) so I'd be worrying about mould and damp unless her window is constantly open in which case your heating bills might be rising. The noise of a washing machine spinning eight times a week is also not much fun.
Separating coloured and white washes is sensible unless you want everything to be grey or pink but you can buy lingerie bags to wash your small and delicate items in during a standard wash of that colour. Good for stopping wires from underwired bras breaking the machine altogether!
I think you need to speak to her. Mention that whilst there's no limit on using the washing machine she does seem to be running it a lot. Ask if she needs help with the settings. Mention the environmental concerns and the cost of electricity to run.0 -
Thanks all. I will go the environmental route and suggest washing our clothes together. Whilst I have no-where near the amount of washing to help full up a machine eight times per week at least it will be used once less per week if we are sharing.0

I'd find the noise annoying.....
However costwise it's probably less than 30 quid extra and if she's good in all other ways....0 -
What about the wear and tear of the machine?0

What about the wear and tear of the machine?
But again new wachine machines a few hundred quid, if you start chopping and changing lodgers voids add up and fractionally a small amount.... Lodgers from hell far more expensive in terms of financials and wear and tear on your sanity. But 8 times is a bit excessive and probably worth saying something, but in the scheme of things it is a small grumble so keep perspective..... the lodger who never washes and when their door opens a rancid haze fills the house far worse, the one who leaves their washing-up for days, has their boyfriend/girlfriend move in each weekend, plays load music at 3am.....0 -
- hate to raise the question but there is one possible explanation for very frequent washing of bed sheets & lingerie... The lady doesn't have a number of gentlemen callers, and several different callers at that??
Whatever your answer I'd want to either -
a) Tell her to go, 5 days notice... or
b) Hear why she does it, decide that she's not bonkers/"a professional lady" and put the rent up after agreeing a usage level (e.g. not more than 3 times a week).
Best wishes & Good luck!

Has she started turning around the tins, or folding the towels so that they are all in a straight line, or anything?
Trouble is, if you share bills and you get on at her, she may get on at you if, for example, you have the lights on more etc. Bit of a slippery slope. I would say it is excessive yes, and perhaps 3 or 4 times is OK, so is it worth an upset for an extra 4 loads of washing?
What a flippin luxury! I wish I was that up to date that I could sort out my washing and do it every day. Mine just piles up in the spare room:rotfl:Thought processes can be managed positively, so that they help you to achieve what you want, rather than hindering your judgement.0
