good luck with the environmental angle but my thoughts are that for people who over estimate the 'dirt' around them have no consideration for the reality of wasting water and detergent. its like these people that spray air freshners around, they couldnt care less that is choking everyone to death.
my boyfriend is convinced that the hot water in the ouse is not hot enough for the washing up. so every time he washes up (yes, its his job) he boils a kettle. despite the fact that the very same tank of hot water does his shower and he has to mix in cold water so he doesnt get scalded, he still believes that the water out the kitchen tap is not hot enough.
then when he makes a coffee or whatever, if he is only doing himself one, he will fill up the kettle the whole way (even sometimes over the limit which causes boiling water to come out the spout), no matter how much i nag, he doesnt change what he does.
on topof that, when he fills the detergent ball up for the washing, he uses a whole ball each time, instead of filling a quarter up like the instructions AND he uses so much washing up liquid when washing up that the cutlery and plates have that soapy surface bubbles on them evern when they are dry. he is a nightmare, no amount of teling him will change what he does and if i raise it with him he says im nagging,,,, arrrrgggghhhhh0 -
I used to live with a friend who would leave her washing until about 10pm of the last day off she had before work the next day.
She would then leave the heating on all night just so she could get her clothes dry!
Another time she put washing out on the line to dry...thank goodness. Only couldnt be arsed getting it in so it rained. She then had to wash it again. Then she left that load in the machine all damp for 2 days...so washed it AGAIN!!!

You seem to be making a 'classic' mistake of taking in a lodger and assuming that your bills will stay the same. They will actually increase substantially and you should have taken that into account when setting the rent. You will risk being seen as the landlord from hell if you criticise over-use of the washing machine (although I agree that it is being over-used), keep switching off lights, restrict number of showers etc. If you try and enforce lots of petty rules you will simply end up without a lodger and the income that goes with her.0

my boyfriend is convinced that the hot water in the ouse is not hot enough for the washing up.
I've tried that, and he's right. The water in the Trent is just about hot enough, the Thames is fine, but the Ouse is way too cold...4.7kWp (12 * Hyundai S395VG) facing more or less S + 3.6kW Growatt inverter + 6.5kWh Growatt battery. SE London/Kent. Fitted 03/22 £1,025/kW + battery £24950 -
is it in a room that can be locked?
you could make out its broken / flooded etc, so she will have to use public laundrette for a few days, or weeks?
making frequent trips and having to pay £?? each time will make her think about the cost..
or, install a coinbox so has to pay YOU each time.. you of course have the only key!
or.. take the machine away completely, if its on its last legs.. then she HAS to go elsewhere.Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..

Am intrigued to know how this goes. 8 times a week is ridiculous, I am 2 maximum. Definitely need to start off with thanking her for being a clean freak before unleashing the rest.0

Oooooooooo coin operated domestic washing machine! What every person with a lodger needs! Can't see any in the UK though.0

ask at local laundry, or google the make/model of whatever they have..
used a large one (30 lb load?) last week- was very quiet, and all done in 1/2 hour.
now all i need is one of those industrial tumble driers, and a hack into absent neighbours leccy..!Long time away from MSE, been dealing real life stuff..
