redmel1621, I have read in another post that you can 'mass make' sandiches & put them in the freezer then everymorning take them out & they are defrosted for lunch..Post did say about fillings as im not too sure..

I've done that before with basic sarnies (Cheese, Chicken etc), but its said I have a very sturdy constitution so this might not be right for everyone.

  • For a cheaper way of buying ham take look this thread;) .

What about fish ? -tuna and sweetcorn bound with mayo or yogurt
sardine and lemon mashed with cream cheese
smoked mackerel pat! (mash mackerel and yogurt/cream cheese together, add lemon or horseradish) with cucumber
  • You're probably better off buying a ham/gammon joint. Not only will this do sandwiches, but you could chop some and use it in a pasta dish for an evening meal or lunch. Or on pizza. Or ham, egg & chips :) Or pasta carbonara .... or caldo verde (Google ... beautiful filling [STRIKE]Spanish [/STRIKE] :o Portuguese soup) etc etc .....

A joint for £5-£8 would probably save you a fortune. Once cooked, it's fine for 7-10 days in the fridge with no loss of flavour, texture or quality. I'm just about to serve some up this evening that was cooked on 22nd.

    Hi redmel,

There's an older thread with lots of ideas and links to other threads with cheap sandwich fillers that should help so I've merged your thread to it to keep all the suggestions together.

    Hi Guys

I know there is probably a thread for this somewhere but can anybody give me any ideas on cheap sandwich fillers.

I normally do ham sandwiches or tuna, sometimes chicken and sometimes cheese with pickle, or egg, always with salad in them. There must be some other things I can use ......

Anyone got any cheap ideas. I seem to spend quite a load on ham at the supermarket every week.

    Thanks guys!

What about rice salad, salad, pasta salads?

Try varying the bread - rolls? wraps? pita?

    Or soup in a thermos?
Ever wonder about those people who spend £2 apiece on those little bottles of Evian water? Try spelling Evian backward.

If you have any butternut squash leftover from, say, Sunday dinner - it's luuuurrrvvvvellly mashed up in a sandwich (with a little bit of pepper)

    yum yum

or one of my faves that Boots don't make anymore - cheese, sliced boiled egg, tomato and salad cream. mmmmm
:dance:There's a real buzz about the neighbourhood
  • One of my favourites is cheese, carrot and salad cream.
It's the only thing I ever use salad cream for - it just doesn't taste the same with mayo.

mmmm, I think I'll get some salad cream on the way home and have them for lunch tomorrow.!

If you have a wide mouthed flask (Wilko's do one which you can actually heat in the microwave!) you can take pasta sauces, chilli and rice, curries(using up the leftovers from the night before's meal); keep some hotdogs warm (with or without onions), take the rolls separate and put some hotdogs together :D

You can use leftover sunday roast meat (those 'dog ends' that aren't easily carved) put them in a food processor with a dab of butter and make your own meat paste for sandwiches.

I love, love, love marmite with iceburg lettuce! (Cheap and cheerful)

Salad sandwiches alone are rather scrummy if you use mayo or salad cream instead of butter/marg on the bread.

What about good old fashioned corned beef and mustard?

I always buy a joint larger than we need so I can use the cold cuts in sandwiches (it's cheaper than buying sliced cooked meats from the deli).
