Claim back any unfair bank charges! Article Discussion Area

I went online this morning to check that a payment had gone into my Barclays current account. Briefly, the timings of a BT standing order and the expected deposit have resulted in my account having been overdrawn by an amount of £6.03 for what literally could not have been more than a few HOURS (depending on when Barclays processed the transactions). For that "privilege" I've had £30 COMMISSION deducted from my account. Can someone tell me if that's legal?0

Can someone advice me what to do next, just over 1 yr ago I lost my job, I managed to find another job but it took 5 mths, however in that time all my money had been eaten up and even though I was temping the bank charges were killing me. The charges were so high that I went way over my overdraft and was unable to keep up, it happened so quickly the bank then defaulted me. Luckily I had two accounts and only defaulted on one, however this is now on my credit file. I am now re-employed in my field I have repayed all the debt to the bank and received a letter of disasociation, the only reason I went into default was due to the bank charges. I have written to the bank (using template from this site) outlining all the unlawful charges which amount to £2048.54 on the defaulted account and £1089.45 on the other account. After what seemed an eternity Woolwich have written back stating that they disagree with my claims, however without any admissions they are willing to offer a sum of £450 and is intended as a gesture of goodwill. I have 4 weeks to comply. The accompanying letter for me to sign states I accept the sum in full and final settlement of my complaint. What should I do and how do I get the default removed from my credit file?:A0

You will find everything you need on:
http://www.consumeractiongroup.co.uk/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=33
You will have to register first before you see the relevant posts.
The good news seems to be that :
1) You can and SHOULD claim back all unlawful charges, they have almost admitted defeat by tempting you with a preliminary offer of a refund
2) On the site there is a template of a letter which will require them, or force them to pull the defaults on the basis of their unlawful charges.
3) If you accept the £450, you are telling them the charges are not unlawful, and you will therefore find it impossible to pull the defaults
4) The site also gives plenty of other examples of letters to be sent, which deal with most circumstances, including Data Protection Act letters which require them to fulfill their obligations within specific time frames

When i met my partner, she had got herself into a little bit of debt, which was increased fivefold by the charges levied on her.
Her initial overdrawn amount was approx £10 but she didnt realise and then got letter after letter, so with poor wages etc she never caught up.
We managed to sort this out but we had to pay in enough to cover it and we then closed the account.
Are we still able to attempt to claim these back or because the account is shut (due to the charges) are we prevented from doing this.
This all dates back to about 1999/2000 and amounts to approx £300.
Thanks for looking, all advice welcome

I am currently in the process of claiming excessive charges back from Barclays Bank, most of which have been for £25 I have received yet another charge this morning and see it has now gone up to £30 surely with all this claiming people are making they would have more sense than to increase their charges!0

Hi
At last Halifax have come back to me with regards the unfair bank charges they are imposing on my account...BUT...they have only offered me £238 opposed to the £1,029.72 that they owe me. Help! Obviously I don't want to accept this offer as I want the full amount. Is there a template letter I can use to go back to Halifax requesting the full amount again?
Thanks0
