I wrote to the Abbey on 6 March becauce £150 of charges had mysteriously appeared for a variety of reasons - mostly paying DD's when overdrawn. I had gone about £3 over my o/d limit and was shocked and didn't understand where they had come from - one DD took me the £3 over, so couldn't understand it. I wrote and asked for details of what the charges were, and for a refund/punitave charges etc.

Got a reply saying they needed to investigate and would reply within 4 weeks.

Within the last 4 weeks, a DD was presented and returned twice because the charges had pushed me over my o/d limit and they were still 'investigating'.

Today, I got a letter saying they were still 'investigating' and may need another 4 weeks. Checked my a/c and was shocked - an exact repeat of the charges from last month had been put on my a/c yesterday!!!! Also yesterday a DD was presented and today returned - NOT HAPPY.

Today i've written back and said whilst I understood they wanted to investigate, all the above had happened and now I wanted this £150 of charges back as well!

    Not happy.

i wondered if anyone has queried the real actual adminstrative cost for banks on charges for a mortgage such as my Natwest eg £15 for photcopying, Redemption/sealing fee £225 or arrears charges around £25/£30 - or charges to answer an enquiry for another lender - £75.

I have a £2,000 overdraft facility with HSBC and have never gone over till last month when only by a few pounds for one day and got stung for £125 for going over my overdraft facility +bank interest charges.
This is extortionate and should I complain to the bank?

I've just received a letter from Intelligent finance this morning detailing important changes to their terms and conditions which state as follows:

    Unauthorised overdrafts
The key change to our terms and conditions is that we are changing the way we calculate interest on unauthorised overdrafts. If you exceed your overdraft limit, we will only charge the unauthorised overdraft interest rate on the amount that is in excess of the agreed overdraft limit. The authorised rate will no longer be charged on the whole balance. This change will take place from 26th March 2006.

I think they are trying on new tricks due to the current pressures from us Money Savers getting are money back. Like it's going to stop us claiming back the charges (plus the new reduced interest!!) LOL ;)

I will update the BAG forum too!!!
My mantra is "Never pay full price!" ;)

Yes, if it's within the last six years.

go to https://www.bankactiongroup.co.uk and find out how to claim these illegal charges back. You are being too nice to the abbey, they don't deserve your respect as an organisation.
  • On last quarters' BT bill I found an additional item listed on my bill, £5 + vat (£5.88) late payment fee.
I read the whole form from top to bottom and NO date is given as to when the bill should be paid by, (unlike bank payment forms which do give a date when payment must be made by), therefore it seems it is up to BT to decide when a bill is paid on time or late. I paid the bill minus £5.88 and sure enough this quarters bill has £5.88 added on. Needles to say I paid it less the £5.88. Just wondered if this charge by BT is covered by the same acts as the bank charges? I suspect no court would agree with a company who ask for late payment charges on a bill with no late payment date. Am I right not to pay?

It may be difficult / not worthwhile to prove that £5 is punitive, as in the bank charges.

BT payment supervisors are authorised to credit up to £10 onto your bill, with a minimum of hassle. I would ring them, first dispute it with the first tier payment person, then when they refuse to comply just politely ask for their supervisor. State that there was no payment date on the bill and that you have no problems in paying the amount apart from that.

If they have any sense, they will refund you the money on the bill.

I would recommend this ASAP, as ongoing debt is likely to result in black marks on your credit record.
