5 years ago my friend and her husband split up and she ended up in a lot of financial difficulty, she went over drawn on her account almost every month, mainly because of the previous months bank charges. I told her about the possibility she might be able to get those charges back and she's looking into it now.
She mention what she was planning to do to a relative who works for the Halifax and she burst out laughing and told her it wasn't possible, in fact it's a well known urban legend! :rotfl:
So everyone here who's had money back, you haven't really you are all just part of a urban legend LOL0 -

I bought a horse with the money I got back - she's real - she doesn't look like an urban myth at all - in fact, I'm sure she'd be decidedly upset to hear herself referred to in this way.
The thing is, people still believe that banks are not just pin-striped cowboys - they actually believe that the banks are still respectable and trustworthy organisations. It was so ingrained into society that even though they have been sytematically ripping people off, people still believe it!!0 -
mark_steps wrote:Back on 3 March, i wrote to my bank, via recorded delivery, asking for a DPA on my account, ie to see which charges had been applied in the last 6 years. I received a letter which said i had to pay a fee of £5 for these. I then called the phoneline on Monday 13 March and was still told the same. The fee has come out of my account on Wednesday 15 March so am just waiting on the statements.
What is my next step? Obv when the statemenst arrive, i highlight the charges, presumably photocopy where there are charges. I assume its then a case of sending the photocopies along with another letter to my bank. But what does the letter inc.?
I have been reading on the other site, bankaction, but i cannot understand any of it. Im not that bright you see...Any advice/info would be greatly welcomed.

Well, after sending my letter to Nationwide about a charge that was placed on my account last year (I could only find one in 2 years of statements!) I got a letter back today and checked my balance and they have credited it back to me! woo! It was only £30 but I'm well chuffed anyway, I know its not the same as some of you guys but I'm really pleased I took the effort to write the letter! Thanks0

the first time I read your post I read it as "bought a HOUSE" I was thinking wow thats a lot of bank charges and they must really like the house to keep calling it she LOL
My friend has written to her branch of the Halifax requesting statements etc so we will see how she goes from there. She has promised to take me away for girly pampering session if she gets all her charges back (as I was the one who told her about it and got her all the links to the websites etc) so I have a vested interest in her getting them back too :A0 -
I have read through the bank action group site and a lot of this thread and I can't see the answer to this question anywhere. I'm sure everyone is much brighter than me but I do want to claim back my bank charges. I have obtained my last 6 years statements and the charges amount to £535. However, I am unsure as how to work out the interest I have incurred on them. Do I take this total amount and work out a figure or do I go through the statements and work out a proportion of the interest I have been charged? If the latter is the case how do I know how much of this interest has been incurred by these excessive charges. I am rather confused about this. The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0

Go to the Bank Action Website and look in the library section. There is a spreadsheet which can work out the interest for you. If you are taking the case to court you can clain 8% interest on the charges applied to the account. If they just refund the charges you can't claim the interest as far as I know.
I don't think you can claim the interest that was caused by the charges being applied but of course I may be wrong. I think Dchurch is the one who may know.Divorce all finished- now to start saving for a better future!0 -
I will be happy enough with the £535. Thanks. Just wondering also is it cheeky to try for a charge applied to a 0% credit card due to a late payment. After all they havent had any interest out of you have they? The forest would be very silent if no birds sang except for the birds that sang the best0
