Just thought I'd let you guys know the follow up to my question following this deal being pulled.

Well I gave them a call at 5pm tonight to follow up on my "online mortgage application" & told the girl I hadn't received my call back as stated on screen when I had finished it. The girl at that point immediately stated that it wasn't actually a formal application, just a personal illustration! "Here we go" I thought, getting ready to quote Woby-Tide's thought's above...as she put me on hold.

She came back saying they had been overwhelmed with applications (wonder if all through MSE's fault?! :D) & those making call backs had been very busy last week. As I had not received the call back, her manager had said they would honour the deal and would I like to proceed?! :T So we went through the 'official' application there & then. After about 40 minutes of questions & her quoting key information points back to me she said she'd pass it onto the underwriter...after another few minutes on hold she said I'd been approved :j

I'm going to get a call back from another team tomorrow evening to just check I don't need any other cover (i.e I'm sure that they're gonna try & sell me insurance etc) and my documents will be posted out for me to sign. She did say that as the original deal is no longer available it will initially be processed as a 2 year fix to bypass the system BUT I ensured she repeated, (as calls are recorded for training & information purposes...) that I was definitely approved for a 5 year fee free fix at 3.99%.

Cheers to the OP of this deal & thanks for the support many of you gave me in reply to my fears of having missed out.

Though I'm not sure how they'd know if you only switched one direct debit...? In any case, I'm past the application stage now so it's no good to me even if I wanted to do it. May help someone else though.

This is exactly what the Customer Services rep explained to me. A&L do not know how many Direct Debits you currently have so all you have to do is switch one of them to qualify for the £100.

I'm still one of these dinosaurs that use high st branches! Glad I am as I had a call from their mortgage advisor on Friday afternoon (who I was booked to see next Tuesday), telling me the offer of the 5yr fixed 3.99% had been withdrawn. She was extremley helpful and said not to worry as if I could make it into the branch on Friday or Saturday she'd process the mortgage application through as an 'exception', there by securing me the fixed rate. So far the A&L customer service has been fantastic and I can't rate them highly enough.

They will indeed try and sell you insurance through their preferred partner, Zurich. However, it's worth noting that the quote Zurich gave me for my insurance was nearly double the best quote I'd had by then. Don't just accept their insurance offer without shopping around a bit!

The "security " guy i was passed over to for the cradit check , also asked me if i wanted any insurance products I said no thankyou and that was it
  • I got the same question - they obviously are keen to sell their products but it is marketed as a " we are just making sure you have full insurance in the event of a claim"

I too said I didn't need anything, they said OK and that was that

I got the hard sell for redundancy/life cover. The girl I spoke to said 'one of our customers took out a mortgage and her husbad got killed in a car crash'. I thought that was stooping really low tbh.
  • agreed - back to selling school for her I think

We too have been told they have to process it as a 2 year fix to get round their computer, but that our mortgage offer will show 5 year fix at 3.99%

When offering their insurance their call centre bod pointed out we may as well consider it as, if they wouldn't offer it (as Zurich wouldn't last time we shopped around for quotes - very old house etc.), they'd waive the £25 admin charge. Zurich rang us last night and, after a long call, did offer to insure us - but as more than 3 times our current premium for equivalent cover !! We are therefore happy to pay their £25 admin charge.
