My week runs from Wednesday to Tuesday so I can take advantage of the Wednesday market here.
Wed - Chicken Lasagne, jacket wedges, peas
Thursday - Chicken Rice Salad
Fri - Pasta with fresh tomato sauce
Sat - Chicken Curry, Rice
Sun - Roast Leg of lamb, roast potatoes, veg
Mon - Shepherd pie, cabbage
Tue - Toad in the hole, broccoli and carrots.
Costings work out at
Chicken £1.99 (tesco special)
Steak mince 71p
Rice 72p
pasta 19p
Turkey sausages 50p
Half leg of lamb £3.00
potatoes 10Kg bag approx £2.00
fresh tomatoes 78p
Broccoli 29p
peas 30p
cabbage - free from XDH
carrots 50p
Onions 30p
2 tins of tomatoes 30p
plus usual store cupboard ingredients such as flour, milk and eggs.
Not counting the store cupboard stuff this totals at £12.78. We don't usually eat puddings but the kids will either have a yoghurt or ice cream. we get through about two tubs a week of mint choc chip and chocolate which comes in at £1.90
As DH is a chronic meat eater there is only one meal without meat and this is all made with fresh veg apart from the peasOrganised people are just too lazy to look for things

I would like to add my thanks to BlackSaturn for starting this thread. I have really enjoyed seeing your menu planner and some of you recipe ideas. Particularly the Cobbler one which indeed seems to have proven popular with a lot of us. And to the other contributers who have added their menu's and recipes.
My own personal stance on this is that I will adapt any of these to suit my own circumstances. I dont think any of us are right or wrong in particular more that we all have different needs, wants and budgets and have to decide how best to meet them.
Lastly, I do feel a little for Black Saturn. There will be those that think that this is 'an interesting debate' and those that think that BS is being bashed for sharing her ideas as requested. If it is to remain a friendly debate we shouldnt make personal references as we have (and there are plenty) against BS or anyone else.
We should be swapping ideas/menus/plans/recipes, if you like them use them and adapt them, if you dont want to use them then don't. Shouldn't it be that easy.
Best wishes to everyone who has contributed.Boots Card - £17.53, Nectar Points - £15.06 - *Saving for Chrimbo*2015 Savings Fund - £2575.000 -
This thread has taken me quite some time to read through. But it's been really interesting. Maybe sometime tomorrow (it's way past my bedtime) I will type out my menu planner for the week.
One thing I did notice though we seem to eat a heck of a lot more fresh vegetables & fruit in our diet here. Other than the fruit (can) used in the cobbler of BS menu plan, I didn't really see any fresh fruit. My normal weekly shop includes apples, oranges, banana's, grapes, rockmelon, watermelon, stone fruits - Whatever is in plentiful supply. Maybe as our climate is a lot warmer we are really spoiled in that area and fruit & veg have always been quite reasonably priced. Also with our main meal, we include six or seven veggies to go with it. Usually our plates are meat/fish/chicken/ with potatoes, pumpkin, zucchini, peas, carrots, beans, cauliflower etc. So we don't tend to *pad* out our main meals with baked beans etc but serve it with more veggies. My weekly order would come to $60. Which is about 30 pounds. This is for 3 adults.
I didn't pick up anybody giving other's a hard time either. Just differing opinions which is good on a discussion board.Don't worry about the world coming to an end today. It's already tomorrow in Australia.0 -
Well, I think Black Saturn should be congraulated. I know there have been many requests for her meal planner, and she has taken the time and effort to type it all out and if we can all take something from it into our own MSE lives, then it is a good thing. Everyone's situation is different , and I think it's all about learning from each other.
Me, I'm going to do the fruit cobbler tomorrow - I love puddings but never do them, but I'm tempted to buy some pineapple or some pears tomorrow. I wondered - what would happen if I poured a bit of Golden Syrup over it - maybe with about 10 mins or so to go?? Just wondered if I would have a nice syrupy glaze (or, just make it gloopy/soggy!)
Thankyou BS - although I might not be so thankful when my waistband gets too tight from the cobbler!!!!"Stay Wonky":D

I found some pears lurking at the back of the cupboard. Cobbler came out nice, but abit gooey in the middle so i left it in the oven while it cooled down and it set properly. I would try the origional cobbler before adding syrup as it was very sweet."On behalf of teachers, I'd like to dedicate this award to Michael Gove and I mean dedicate in the Anglo Saxon sense which means insert roughly into the anus of." :T Good post Aussielass - hope you're enjoying your weather.
Just reported on our TV news - 1 in 8 people in the UK are obese and there's nothing that causes that other than food !
As a dedicated fruit and veg nag, I'm impressed by your food shopping. It's slightly more difficult in the uk as although most of what you buy is available here almost all year round, the stuff that has to be imported is naturally expensive. Another difficulty is that because of the way food is manufactured and produced nowadays it contains fewer essential fats, vitamins and minerals and industrialised farming (where the value mince comes from) has introduced pesticides and growth hormones, this alters the body fat composition of amimals resulting in less omega-3 fatty acids - the good ones - and more of the bad omega-6.
Anyone who has the best interests of their families at heart can easily find on the internet what a healthy balanced diet should be made up of, and see where they can safely make adjustments in order to spend their money wisely.
There is nothing that stands in for good health, and food and a healthy lifestyle ensure protection from future illness and support with existing health problems and disabilities, particularly in children. I can be really boring about all thisI didn't pick up anybody giving other's a hard time either. Just differing opinions which is good on a discussion board.
Personally I'm not too bothered what other people eat, if they know what they're doing, as long as they're not taking up my bed because of their diet induced illness when I want it for my hip replacement !0 -
