From what I remember of BS's posts on the 'smoking banned' thread was that she was not a smoker - did I miss something.

Anyway I love seeing peoples menu plans as other posters have said it gives me inspiration to try different things.

I wouldnt think twice of critisising (bad sp!) anyone elses diets, we are all different and I am personally getting bored and fed up of the goverment telling us what to do and what to eat.

DD and myself eats lots of vegetables and dont like much fruit but my OD & DS are exactly the opposite. We try and eat a varied diet but if I did take notice of the food police everytime we have a scare it wouldnt be a varied diet at all.

Just out of interest - my Dad and his brothers spent their early years living on rationing and it doesnt appear to have done them any harm though I must admit I dont know how much fruit and veg was allowed on rationing.

Anyway sorry to go on but please people keep posting your menu plans - I really like them - one day I might even be organised to post my own!! (and pigs might fly)

Fruit and veg weren't rationed at all during the war,but you were limited to what was home-grown and in season. The govt.encouraged people to eat lots of veg esp. potatoes and carrots as it saved shipping.

Interestingly rationing was the only time when the govt. had complete control over the nation's diet.Although it wasn't popular and was dull we came out of the war healthier than ever-before or since.

    Hi All
as i mentioned in an earlier post i try to come up with a weekly kids pack up plan not only does it save time and money but also the kids know whats in their boxes.

monday= pizza ,carrot sticks, homemade cake, apple and a bag of crisps

tuesday= ham and cheese roll, cucumber sticks, bananna, homemade shortbread biscuit ,crisps.

Wednesday=stuffed pitta bread stuff with whatever your children like ,dried fruit flakes, orange, homemade cake, crisps.

Thursday =cold pasta with mayo ham and cheese ,homemade flapjack ,apple, carrot sticks and crisps.

    Friday =cheese and crackers,fruit salad,homemade biscuit,crisps.

all kids are different as are their likes and dislikes so i appreciate that these ideas would not suit everybody but hope they can be of some help.

You can get nice value nachos in crisp size bags as opposed to the giant bags they normally come in from Tescos and since nachos are generally baked and not fryed they've got to be better (although I don't have a pack to hand just to check the nutritional facts)

I sometimes put home-popped pop-corn in lunch boxes.I toss a little parmesan cheese or pizza seasoning in it.

The kids made Black Saturns malt loaf yesterday and very nice it was too. We will definitely be making it again and possibly trying variations- adding fruit juice instead of tea, grated apple, mashed banana etc

    Thanks BS

Many things were rationed and a week's ration for one person would equal one serving for someone today - 2oz of this, 2oz of that. Even bread was rationed, at one point as late as the 1950's. There are some interesting websites describing diet and meal planning during ww2, not that I'd recommend snoek or carrot cake to my worst enemy.
As far as being critical about diets is concerned, I'm old enough to feel confident using my judgement about all kinds of things - smoking, drugs, bad diet, obesity, promiscuity, domestic violence, as they all cost NHS vast amounts of money.
  • People were less sedentry (sp??) during the war years which probably helped as well as a diet of fresh fruit and veg, the odd egg and some meat. My parents lived through the war and they kept a lot of the ways and recipes from then. Basically the food being rediscovered now is what I grew up with.
