A question about this board, and the BG's.

Shellsuit.....Absolutely....but I thought we had moved on from that... (the BG thing) and started to discuss what was at the root of the problem, and perhaps change a few things on this board. Trust me to ruin it all by being childish.
However. I have just done three things
...... I happily ran a hot bath for my hard working husband, I watched the Tonight program, and I re-read this thread.
I have realised, in the sphere of things - including my own problems with my druggie son, not to mention current events..ie Natasha Richardson , Jade Goody etc.....(God! How blessed are we that only have dogs to moan about) that sitting here night after night on MSE, discussing my son, arguing about dogs, all the while (admittedly) drinking, is probably not a great idea.
For my dogs, my marriage or my liver. (In that order!!)
I need to stop feeling sorry for myself, and I really should be switching off this lap top, getting a grip, and actively dealing with the humongous problems in my life, instead of getting bolshy with people that really don't deserve it.
So, I am sorry for any comments that have upset or aggrieved anyone. .
And..... cheerio!Life.

The horses are already ending up on French dinner plates - did you not hear the news this week?
Haven't the french always eaten horse? - I ate some in france by mistake, and it is sold in supermarkets in the netherlands...it tastes like stringy, coarse stewing beef. I can't see why they bother.sitting here night after night on MSE, discussing my son, arguing about dogs, all the while (admittedly) drinking, is probably not a great idea.

Steph, please take this in the spirit in which it is intended - my advice is to worry about your liver first, because without it you cannot do anything for the son, dogs or husband. I sat with a friend as he died of cirrhosis of the liver last summer; it has made me seriously re-evaluate how I treat mine, as once the symptoms appear the damage has been done, and often, by then, it is too late.
I am sorry your son is using, and I hope you are getting the help you need in coping with it, but the legal drugs, ie. alcohol and nicotine, cause far more deaths than all the illegal drugs put together.0 -

I know they always have, sure Ive eaten it a few times (thought it quite nice tbh) but I mean a lot of our thorough breds are ending up as dinner as people are going bust and can no longer afford them. The rescues are full so they are being sold for dinner0 -

Thats horrible, unfortunately its probably inevitable. Poor things, don't want to start a debate about horse racing but having read about it I have serious doubts.....but I think its never going to be banned or anything. I'm just going to say its a shame that so many animals get used up and then abandoned when they are no longer any use.0 -
would it be terrible timing to say i've eaten dog meat?
it was by mistake. same kind of situation as FC...but I was in Vietnam, not France.0 -

whoo don't tell me that... when you say 'dog meat' you mean 'meat from a dog' don't you, not pedigree chum or similar
aarrgh - I once had a terrible nightmare - I was eating spare ribs and it turned out to be my old dog, who had been cooked!!!
When I woke up, (I had to go and check, it was one of those horribly realistic dreams) the dog was still in her basket, snoring, luckily... unlike the dream where I was eating a giant marshmallow and when I woke up my pillow had gone!!!! :rotfl: (bad joke, sorry!)
Anyway Lowis, what did it taste like?0 -

Eating dog where that's the culture is no different from eating cow where that's the culture. Some Brits would rather starve than eat part of a dog (not me I hasten to add, I'd eat anything), and many Hindus starve because they won't eat cow......................I'm smiling because I have no idea what's going on ...:)

This is the crux perhaps....that a lot of people who do not understand the 'reasons' many people breed, do see it as a way to make money. Of course I agree there are many dodgy breeders out there, and I hope there is some way found to better regulate the practice, to weed out those who are purely in it for the money. I personally know no breeders who do it for the money. I find it abhorrent , as do most responsible breeders. Making money is the last thing on my mind - and actually, with smaller breeds and litters, by the time you have paid the stud fee, all the vets bills, worming, feeding, keeping the pups till 16 weeks as recommended by the breed notes...you can actually end up out of pocket.
OH GOOD! That would certainly slow things down in rescue:D .
You are very quick to throw blame at others, and yet having read your posts I find your own tone far from pleasant or concilliatory. Furthermore, your previous post DOES refer to your dogs being kept in your large kitchen, in which you all spend most of your time so just reading back (as most of us do if someone is coming on to complain about the board and a previous thread I am sure) means that we can see you contradicting yourself:D

Well, we've got three dogs, and we love them to bits, but we also love our house. I was getting a bit fed up with the doggy smell everywhere, and when we got a new downstairs carpet, we decided to bite the bullet, and keep the dogs in the kitchen most of the time, and only allow them through on special occasions. (Yes, they are allowed to sit under the tree at Christmas, gazing up at the lights like the rest of us)
I suppose we are lucky that we have a fairly big kitchen - and two fairly small dogs and a big one - as this could be a bit of a nightmare if it was the opposite way round.
We also sit in it all the time...we have a telly etc, the back door is always open and they run in and out of the enclosed garden. I am in here on my laptop with them at my feet as I type.
I bought two huge bits of vet bed, so they have somewhere to sit and lie on the tiled floor, as well as their beds. This absolutely stinks after a few days (we have a golden who loves to bathe in smelly ditches) so it gets chucked in the machine.
They are all brushed every morning outside, and I use doggy deoderant on the big one which really makes a difference!
I also have a coffee machine which is first thing most people say they smell when they come into the kitchen!
Edit: totally agree with above poster about the gland thing - if there ever is a particularly fishy smell, it could be anal glands. Yeuck!.
Let me explain to you that as far as I can see it would be impossible for anyone in rescue to think kindly of breeders, no matter how responsible the breeder thinks they are, because we see the worst results of their actions, and we clean up the mess.
Once again, you are willing to totally ignore the fact that FC has posted legitimate information that would, imo, make any true animal lover who is considering breeding pedigree dogs sit up and take notice if they were truly concerned with the animals: but it is once again being ignored or met with the "that doesn't apply to me" attitude;) .
Someone asks (pro-breeding) that we own our "abuse" of breeders: well, I don't think I have ever abused one at all, but perhaps we could ask the breeders to also "own" their own part in the problem of too many dogs not getting the homes they deserve. Once that part has been addressed then I think those dogs that did end up in rescue would be very much smaller numbers and from situations that come from genuinely unforseen circumstances and not just too much expendable income and a "whim" assisted by a never ending stream of "pedigree" (and some of the pedigrees I have read have been enough to curl ones hair) dogs in the market and an irresponsible attitude to pet ownership.
I say this with the mixed feeling that their are breeds of dog which I would hate to see lost (although many of the breed standards need close inspection to make sure that the standards do no further damage to the overall health of the dogs involved, and something needs to be done about the levels of close inbreeding that is prevalent) and would not wish to see breeding gone forever. Furthermore, I should be equally sad to see the total demise of the Heinz 57 because they are often the very best natured and most loyal and loving of pets and still definitely have a place in the World imo:o
However, for every one responsible breeder there are probably 10 irresponsible ones and I think the really responsible ones would be those who would be equally up in arms at the irresponsible ones and wanting to look for answers to this along with the rescuers. I also think they would have a lot more tolerance and understanding of our worries and concerns for the welfare of the animals;) The irresponsible ones will continue to not give a shoite and imo are the ones who would be upset by the suggestion that breeding in the current economic climate is irresponsible:D"there are some persons in this World who, unable to give better proof of being wise, take a strange delight in showing what they think they have sagaciously read in mankind by uncharitable suspicions of them"(Herman Melville)0
