Rag Bags/Bags (merged)

Ive seen some fantastic rag bags in boutique stores and wondered if anyone actually knew how to make them???

All I know is that strips of rags are knitted together somehow...

Please help! :j

    Very briefly:
    piece of cotton
layer on all your scraps & tack in place
layer piece of silk ( what the lady I know who does rag bags uses )
    Machine stitch your pattern
snip open the silk to view the scraps

As I said very basic. I am certain there will be plenty of sites if you google but I am shattered otherwise I'd look for you. They look brill. She gets all her fabric from charity/boot sales as the bright garish stuff which looks so great in these projects don't seem to sell so well so she gets a bargain.

Just had quick google and came up with this:
    http://www.knittingpatterncentral.com/directory/bags_totes_purses.php

Scroll down to Rag Bags and it looks like there are instructions there.

A great way to do it would be to cut old clothes and jeans into strips and tie them together. Then get fat knitting needles and garter stitch a large rectangle. Sew up two sides and add some handles even pleated material would do. very money saving.

I;m sure I saw something a while back about either knitting or crocheting plastic carrier bags ...........making them into proper shopping bags..........wish I could remember where I saw it.
