Hi all - haven't posted on here for ages but still spend a lot of time reading about what everyone else is up to. In answer to Mrs T's question as to what we all do, I'm a Phoenix trader - selling greetings cards, stationery etc and hopefully lots of Christmas cards! So busy time for me at the moment with lots of Christmas fairs etc which is great - just hope it stays that way.

Hiya
I just wanted to say Hello. I have been lurking for over a week now. I am somewhere in the middle. Although I have been starting my own business, I am also looking for a job as it will be a while until my business will be making enough profit for me to live off it. So, I am registered self-employed, but I also get JSA.
I will write more soon
Cheers0 -

Well tonight I have a meeting with a representation company (they are taking me out for Dinner) Hopefully they are going to sponsor a few pages for my Honeymoon & Weddings magazine so all keep your fingers crossed.
I hit the phones yesterday to see who would sponsor each pages and had really good feedback so now I just have to send out the proper proposals to them but looks very hopeful I will get this thing off the ground - which will be a great marketing tool for us. I think I underestimated how much work it was going to involve though!
Does anyone have any good contacts in the wedding network?? I could do with getting some "Advocates" ( a great little referal scheme we set up as referal advocates can earn vouchers for each booked referal to use on their own holidays!)
HAve a good day all !!!!I am a Travel Agent
My company’s ATOL/ABTA numbers are L318X. MSE doesn't check my status as a Travel Agent, so you need to take my word for it. ATOL numbers can be checked with the Civil Aviation Authority. This signature is here as I follow MSE's Travel Agent Code of Conduct.0 -
Oh another SE q... if i have registered my business "type" as mainly admin stuff does that mean I have to tell them if I do anything different like the IT work (which I totally forgot to mention on the phone... DUH!) or any other types of work like that? Or are they more interested in if I was say doing stuff like selling goods vs providing services?
I shouldn't worry about it - there will probably be some paperwork through so you can change it on that if you want to, or on the self-assessment form itself there is a place to put in your type of business. But certainly on the self-assessment form, you don't get many characters to describe your type of business, so you can't go into any detail! Is the IT work similar enough to the admin so that you could lump it all together ('IT and admin services' or something fairly general like that? If it is all desk based office work that's what I'd be tempted to do. If you want more detailed advice, I'd ask on the Cutting tax board, there are posters there with a lot of knowledge.0 -
I guess that IT and Admin work would cover it to be honest
If they don't allow much space though then I guess they're not actually that interested in what you do - I guess so long as it's not "drug smuggler and call girl" they probably aren't too worried so long as you declare all your earnings? :rotfl:
I'll check on the Cutting tax board tho just to be sureDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -

That's what I've always assumed - the way I think about it, if you are earning £600 a year in this second job, your tax bill will be about £150 at the most, so as long as you are doing your tax returns & paying the bill on time, it's not going to be worth a tax inspector's time to even look at it - I don't know what their hourly rate would be, but say it was £25 per hour, there is no way they'd ever get enough back from you to cover their costs if they did raise a query on your return. That's my logic anyway! And if you are not handling cash, or claiming for a company car, there isn't that much scope for them to look for under paid tax.0 -
From what I remember reading, at least with regard to your expenses, if you dont earn over 30k from SE sources, then you dont have to itemise your expenses on your tax bill, just list it as one figure. Then the tax office pick so many (dont know how many) that they want you to show receipts for the figure you put down.0

Afternoon all..brrr..I havent thawed out yet.
I am back from viewing the most gorgeous and inexpensive venue right in the heart of Birmingham - The Council House - their banquetting suite is divine and you can hire the whole place including the museum for £1200 + VAT - they only do weddings at weekends and on bank holidays. The Council House was built in 1850 and took 4 years to build and hasnt changed since bar a lick of paint here and there and some carpet up the marble staircase.
Wandered through the German market and picked up a few bits, found a shop that was closing down and all bangles were £1 so I picked one for me and 2 sets of Indian bangles for my best chum. Got rained on and although I need to go to the bank to pick up my debit card, decided that I would come home first and warm up. Managed to network on the bus and a woman took my business card:cool:
Have calls to make this afternoon too.
Now I have a vision of MrsT as a drug smuggling call girl:eek:
Fantasy-Dreams - are you on a new deal programme if you are still getting JSA?0
