  • Hi young and reckless,

I am into my 3rd week of not smoking now, and yes it is hard, but believe it or not even tho I am only into my 3rd week there are days now that I don't crave for a ciggie. I used the patches for the first week and then found that I could manage without them. It does help when you quit with someone, my OH quit at the same time as me, alas he is finding it harder than me, but then he has smoked for 40 yrs and I only started smoking 4 years ago, which in itself was a silly thing to do, but I was going thru a really stressful period in my life, anyway I digress, my OH was prescribed a tablet called ZYBAN from our local resolution clinic at the docs surgery and that has helped him, although I must say that they ought to offer anger management classes when you give up smoking and for some reason my OH has developed Tourettes Syndrome!!
Does your friend at work not want to quit with you??
I have to agree for me the hardest part was the habit thing. I got over that by just walking into another room or finding something else to do in that split second, also the thought of having to start quitting all over again puts me off starting again. I could go on and on..........

Good luck, you can do it and you will do it.

    Debt-free and Proud!
I haven't read this thread all the way through so apologies if I repeat something.

I gave up smoking in 1998 after realising that I had, erm, forgotten I'd have to pay the solicitor when I bought my house and giving up was the only way to find the money!!

It was hard. I'd smoked 20-30 a day for nine years. But I gave up overnight.

I bought a Nicorette inhalator fo those moments when I simply HAD to suck on something (oo er!)

I kept a box of cigarettes in the house so I felt they were there if I needed one.

Then I operated the 30mins/one day principle:

If I wanted a fag, I'd look at the time, and say I could have one in half an hour.

when the half hour was up, I did the same again.

When it got too much I took a drag on the inhalator.

When I had a day under my belt, I was proud, so the next day, I'd say to mysel'I can have one in half an hour if I still want one, but then I'll have lost a day'.

That kept me going. Eventually I stopped wanting one.

I still sometimes want one, and sometimes I have one. But I no longer smoke. I haven;t had one socially for five months now.

What I did do was avoid anywhere I would want a fag for the first month - no pubs, no coffee at a cafe, etc.

And save the money somewhere to motivate yourself - or allocate a debt to your smoking fund so you can measure how well you are doing financially. Don;t let it go into one big pot or you will lose motivation.

It is hard, but it is do-able. What did it for me was reading that the physical addiction is gone ater 24 hours, and then it is all your mind - no way was I going to be beaten by my own mind!!

    Good luck.

while this was not perfect. he was cutting down 2 a 5vr a month from a 5ver a day.

ive just found out that a long time friend of mine is dying from cancer... an operation has extended her time from 3 months to maybe a bit more ... she is 30 and has a 6 year old daughter plus a husband. She has had radio therapy , her body is covered in bruises and swollen by the steroids, she is nearly bald, can speak and eat by herself at the moment but thats it, doesnt sleep and has enough concentration span to cope with half an episode of dads army ... she cant even tolerate the sound of her little girl laughing and playing .... she isnt going to see her daughter make her next birthday or this next christmas ....
I have two little boys ... i havent had a cigerette since the day i found out and went to see her ....
my heart is breaking for her and her family and i cant believe i have been so selfish smoking , if not for the 15 years i have smoked but for the four since my babies have been around.
every time i get a craving i just picture her .. the anger soon replaces the need for a cigerette ....
sorry to be so morbid and dont mean to bring the mood down but talk about getting a wake up call when i needed one.
:EasterBun ...what more do I need to say?!
its all in the name of medical science.

Dear Klare we went through this with MIL last year and I really thought it would be the thing to stop us..I think it is the main reason behind our decision to quit but we weren't up to it right away (far too stressed)...good luck with your attempt and if it doesn't work this time keep trying XX :T
  • Sadly fell off the wagon the dreaded weed struck today...although only smoked four, will try again tommorrow, and klare that is a wake up call for me, I have a 8 year old daughter who I want to see grow up and be happy...

now I`m going back to the list of 501 ways of packing in smoking , probaly the best one is willpower,it`s free and with you all the time....

hitting yourself with a stick and shouting the mantra walter raleigh your a baddy just dosen`t do it for me!!!!!!!!!
