mom23 im with you on that one i feel exactly the same i gave up twice siccessfullyish, once for 15 months but gained 3 stones in weight and once for 3 months before i just fancied one. i have a constant battle with myself to try and give up, i am a nurse so i do know the damage it does to your health. i have made my house a non smoking house too and have to go outside and it does put you off. just have to keep trying i guess.
    regards

  • hi,am currently in the same boat as you gave up two days ago but couldnt manage without help so started smoking again, had to buy some cigs cause wanted one so then of course had to finish the whole packet!! Anyway today is another day and have stuck a patch on my leg and its going ok am just missing putting a cig in my mouth. Good luck and stay positive think of the money you will save pit it in a jar and watch it grow then treat yourself to something nice.
  • Thank you to all of you for replying so quickly, I feel better already!
Lally you're on, lets really try and quit together - is tomorrow to soon for you? God I hope I can pull this off, I'm gonna really try. I don't know if cutting down will work for me, its kinda prolonging the agony, but ask me again this time tomorrow!!
I have patches all ready although they do make me itch a bit, I just don't want to feel really edgy and irritable.
Thanks again everyone, I'll keep you posted....

I used patches both times i quit and restarted while using the patches i found it easy but i kept becoming convinced that i did not need the patches and stopped wearing them only to find as soon as I went out i would smoke again so my advice is finish the course of treatment from the patches and as far as the itching goes change where the patch is as i used to get itching on one arm but not the other i even tried my butt cheek but it itched like mad so i obviously have a sensetive bum XXX

    Good Luck

    Information overload!
"Some say the cup is half empty, while others say it is half full. However, this is skirting around the issue. The real problem is that the cup is too big."
  • Hello Everyone,

I didn't manage to stop although I didn't have very many. I have decided that I will have to just stop completely and when I finish this packet then thats it. I quit before and I know I can do it again, I just have to bite the bullet and ride the first few days out.
Thanks so much to you all for replying x

    Did you try the patches?
were they the 24 hour ones because my sis said they helped with the one first thing in the morning
one thing tho she said if they are irritating you then perhaps you should ring the helpline as hers never did and she always changed the place where she put the patch
    hope this helps
    and good luck

  • I wish you every luck in kicking the habit. If you want to you can!

I actually gave up the weed on April 10th 1984. I remember the date well... it was exactly one week after national no-smoking day. I had refused absolutely to give up on no-smoking day - no one was going to tell me I couldn't smoke - even though I knew it was bad for me, expensive etc etc - and my wife had been diagnosed with Breast Cancer some time before so I had every incentive to pack in.

What finally gave me the push was that a lad that I worked with had given up on no-smoking day - and was still off the weed on 10th April. I thought "blow it - if he can I'm damned sure I can"... I've never smoked to this day! He started again a few weeks later :) (me smug...)

To start with I used nicorette (?) chewing gum - it was horrible but did the trick. After a short while just having it with me was enough - I rarely used it. However, I remember going out without it one day for a game of golf - and I was panic-stricken! But, I survived.

Strange thing, even these days I could enjoy a smoke - but know I never will again. I even, occasionally, dream that I have started again - I feel horrified in the dream and greatly relieved when I awake.

Please keep us posted - I really hope you manage it!

we decided to give up on jan 2nd this year, and failed dismally. I managed to not smoke or want one all day, until I came home and found darling other half lokoing really forlorn, hed been to the shop and bought 10. We shared them.

The impetus for it was that, all these people are buying holiday homes abroad etc and thats what we really want ( to live in eventually) why cant we get one? Well, simple economics tells me that the £35 we spend a week each totals £280 a month between us, which will pretty easily give us a slice of paradise if we're astute.

Unfortunately OH has done zyban before and it didnt agree with him, and thus he is a bit battle scarred/ cant be bothered to try again as yet. I personally would find it very hard to give up if hes there puffing away, as I dont really want to give up, but am too tight to smoke over the long term ( I dont even want to think about what ive spent over the years)

Luckily i have many freinds who are non smokers and troop off to egypt and city breaks to prague and the like, and they bring me fags back. Sad fact is, im too skint to go with them, probably because Im smoking! *rolling eyes at self*
 Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
    This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast
