Definitely see if your GP offers a Stop Smoking Clinic in your area. Ours does - patches/gum/inhalators/Zyban on prescription as well as groups and one-to-one support.
I'd second Allen Carr. I read his book 4 years ago and have now been a non smoker for 4 years.Lightbulb moment: 2nd January 2006

Thank you to all of you for replying so quickly, I feel better already!
Lally you're on, lets really try and quit together - is tomorrow to soon for you? God I hope I can pull this off, I'm gonna really try. I don't know if cutting down will work for me, its kinda prolonging the agony, but ask me again this time tomorrow!!
I have patches all ready although they do make me itch a bit, I just don't want to feel really edgy and irritable.
Thanks again everyone, I'll keep you posted....Quit smoking 18/08/070 -
I gave up smoking on Jan 1st as a new years resolution, surprisingly enough the first one ive ever managed to stick to! Patches are a life saver, go for the three step program. Start on the very strong ones as these replace the cigs and keep you full of nicotine. This gives you the chance to break the rituals of coffee=cig, break=cig, food=cig etc etc. After 6 weeks move down to stage two for two weeks, and then stage 3 for two final weeks. I’m just about to start the final stage and already notice a huge difference to my health and my bank account!
Good luck, keep at it. Its the best money / life saving choice ever!!
PS. There all on buy one get one half price at Boots, make sure you use your advantage card and print off a 100 points for £15 purchase voucher!Debt at Highest, £18,000.00

i gave up with gum and stayed that way for four months. only started again when bored. i now smoke roll-ups and spend all the time in my boyfriends house where i'm not allowed to smoke. compared with my heaviest of 20-25 'real fags' a day i am now on about 5 rollies a day, 15 when i go out. it's much cheaper. have you thought about making your house non-smoking? you will feel, and smell, the benefit.0

If you cut down the cigarettes you smoke you really will be prolonging the agony of quitting as your body will be in an almost constant state of withdrawal!! I quit cold turkey and didn't find it that horrific although the first week is often called HELL WEEK!! Each to their own quit methods, whatever works is good - right? I found support at https://www.whyquit.com - again it's not to everyone's taste as it doesn't support the usage of NRT but has some excellent articles to motivate you.
Has anyone overcome the drinking beer and not smoking hurdle? I really need some help with that as it just doesn't taste the same : (
Good luck!0 -
I gave up in 1999 with accupuncture - my dad died of lung cancer also and while I desperately wanted to stop smoking, I was depressed at the time and just needed a bit of help - it worked a treat.
Anyone who is in the west yorkshire area (or who can get there easliy enough) can PM me for details of where I went - no connection, just want to pass on something that worked for me and a lot of other people I know.

Go and see your GP and get the patches on prescription.
I used the patches to quit 18 months ago as did my dad 2 years ago (80 a day man) dad got his patches free as he is a pensioner, and now my hubby is on his last week with them.
I wouldn't buy them over the counter, they are too expensive and are available to everyone on prescription, so in true money saving style go to your GP and get them, most GP's are more than happy to prescribe them.
Your GP will probably prescribe
2 weeks strong patches to start = £6.50
then 4 weeks strong = £6.50
then 2 weeks next ones down = £6.50
then 2 weeks lowest ones = £6.50
That works out at £26.00 for 10 weeks, as opposed to your £26.00 a week.
Definately worth a go and if you get free prescriptions its even better.
I now hate smoking, cannot stand the smell of it. I don't even crave them any more, I hate them so much.
The 1st hurdle is getting that 1st patch on your arm that was the hardest bit for me. Once I had done that I never looked back.
Good Luck and I hope you succeed :jDebt at highest May 2004 - £65,639.22

When we quit in 2002 we planed it in advance....
we had been on holiday and came back with 3000 fags
we had decided to quit wehn we returned.
My girlfrend at the time said she was not quiting until she had smoked all her fags.
The the day we got back i said tomorow i am quiting and the rest is history....
(i sold the fags and made a killing) and have never touched one since.
My gilfreind (now my wife) also quit too, because it is far easyer to quit with someone (she has had maybe 4 fags since we qiut when she has been drunk on holiday)
1 point to add my mum brother and my wifes mum and 2 sisters and most of my mates all smoked around us when we quit ....
Good Luck ...its hard but worth it..Debit was £64k (light bulb Feb 05)
Debt now 60K Dec 07 DFD= nov2019"The only time money comes before work is in the dictionary"0 -
Let vanity spur you on!! I gave up for about 6 weeks last year (sadly back on now) and the difference in the skin on my face was staggering, after just one week. I'm not kidding, I looked 10 years younger.(mind you, if you're only about 20 you might not want to look like a 10 year old, but you know what I mean!!):snow_grin"Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow........":snow_grin0

I feel really guilty as i am the only smoker in the house(although have to smoke outside!)
I do not like smoking, the smell, nicotine stained fingers ,expense, basically everything about it. so why do i do it!!!!
I do not feel ready to totally quit (to much other stuff going on!!) but i am going to cut down.
My challenge is that from mon i am cutting down by 50% and gradually try to cut down further.
The money saved it is going into a holiday fund!!!
I have tried to give up totally in the past, patches, gum etc( even having reg appts with nurse at local surgery!!) but have always failed.
I can but try!!!0
