Anyone been on Preloved site?

Options
I've seen a 5 months old puppy that sounds right for me on above mentioned site. I've emailed and left a message on mobile phone number of person advertising this pup.

Guess there aren't any guarantees......

My boss has at long last given in and said I can have a dog and take it to work!! Yippee!!

I'm now looking for a pup, thats small, housetrained and vaccinated, so it has to be say around 4 months plus. I have certain allergies so have to avoid smooth coated dogs.

If you know of any in particular..... :D

I'm so happy - I have hated being dogless for the past few years, its like a nagging pain that won't go away.

Careful, you get a lot of scammers on there. Just make you you do not part with your money before you get the dog. Some ask for you to meet them at a certain place or ask where you live, so yep i'd be careful if I were you :D

Goodluck though if it is a genuine ad.

You are gonna here this lots on here.

Try the rescue centers, lots of cats and dogs, will all be immunized and all begging for a new forever home.

You can visit your pup a few times get to know them etc...
Life is about give and take, if you can't give why should you take?

Please, please avoid websites such as Freecycle/Gumtree/Preloved like the plague, you won't know if Puppy farmers are advertising there, any reputable Breeder certainly won't be. I too suggest a Rescue, there're tons of Pups in Rescues, all will come with Rescue back up (So, let's say you found you were allergic to the Pup & needed to rehome it, they'd have you take it back to them), they'll be vaccinated & microchipped, normally neutered if old enough & they'll normally know it's history.

To buy a Pup from Preloved is to ask for trouble in most cases. Make sure you see the Pup with it's Mum & that it's in good health, but my advice is to try a rescue or even a Breed Rescue if you want a particular breed, even a reputable breeder beats Preloved, please think about it

(I'm glad the boss will let you take one to work though!)

Well, like the other guys, Im horrified that people can advertise living creatures on sites like that. Apart from anything else, they are often scams.

Im also a bit concerned about your list of needs - you want the dog housetrained when its still only a little baby? What if you take it to work and its crying, weeing and pooing?

And why must it be innoculated before you have it? If this is because of cost issues, then Id urge you to think again about whether you could afford long term care of a dog? The neutering and innocs alone may run in to a couple of hundred pounds and then there are the on going costs.

Also, the allergy problem - what will you do if you find you are allergic to a dog you have taken on? It would be better if you were to approach a rescue and then visit the dog several times for a good period of time to see whether you have a reaction before actually taken a pet on.

Good points here, I meant to bring up the allergy thing too, even these so called hypoallergenic Dogs can't be guaranteed to not cause problems. Also, what if you have to change jobs? (Redundancy/illness etc) not many employers would let you take Fido to work. I'd also wonder if it'd get too attached & develop Seperation Anxiety? Have you had Dogs before?
  • its full of nigerial scammers offering free to good home dogs...

even if the dog exists, if you are unable to keep it for any reason, or if it turns out to be wrong dog for you, there will be no safety net as there is with rescue. I would be very surprised if the dog is housetrained as they claim.

And of course there is always the possibility the dog in question is actually stolen...
Go through a rescue or breed rescue if you want a dog - worst case go through a reputable breeder - do NOT get a dog through the free adds or similar...

Take it from your location note that you are in Essex?

There are so many rescues in that area - indeed Barnardos wouldnt be too far for you.

First of all, lady just called me to say that she had found a good home for her pup....

Secondly, yes, I have had dogs all of my life and I am no spring chicken... :o

I find that short haired dogs, as in Labs and German Shepherds, do aggravate me.

I grew up with Airedales, have had Old Englishes and also a nutty poodle called Fred. I was fine with all of them. Obviously poodles are ok, - its seems that if the coat is a bit wiry and not very 'moulty', then I am ok.

Hethmar - I do get all of your points.. I have been considering this on and off for a couple of years now and badgering my boss too. I work in an office at a local independent garage. We border on to fields. I would prefer a small dog, as it can have a lovely little corner in the office at work.

Naturally it would be better if it is vaccinated as I would need it to be able to come out with me to work etc straight away - I am happy to pay for the vaccinations myself if need be. And it would be extremely helpful if it is housetrained too.

I know that normally people go for the young pups, but I don't mind an older one or one that is a year or two old.

I get breaks plus lunch hour, so it will get lots of walks, and knowing our customers, it could get very spoilt too.... And I will love it to death like I have all of my previous dogs.

Is there anything else that you would like to know about me? Or is that enough to get me some assistance?

There's no need to be like that, if someone asks about homing a Dog from preloved it's normal to assume they might not know much about Dogs, as most people who do know not to touch places like that with a barge pole. All fo the comments whether questions or advice were made with the best of intentions I can assure you.

I know alot about Dogs too, having worked with them & spent many years living with them (Tho none have been owned by me) & when I chose to get one I came here & there was a HUGE thread about it in which I recieved all sorts of advice & it was great to get the help. Thanks to the people here I have the perfect Dog & am really happy as she's been way better than I ever anticipated.

Why post if you don't want to recieve replies that may not be ones you'd want to hear? Someone coming on here saying they're enquiring about a Pup from Preloved that preferably is vax'd & trained doesn't sound like a knowledgeable Owner, so my comments at least were aimed to find out if you do know about the Dogs & to help. How can you expect help if we don't know your situation, and IMO giving you things to think about is a good thing not bad!
