It also keeps the date and time set in case of a power failure.
I ordered a V4 recently and they sent V4plus minus the power cable. I have a universal charger and asked them the for the voltage and polarity settings. It's 12v ,+polarity. If you have an old one lying around with the same voltage,I assume it would be ok to use if you needed to

Does that mean the + is on the outside or the inside for the polarity?

Yes, the cheapest available are always listed in the MSE UK Callchecker (it's updated every day).

I think with talk talk, bulldog etc... you get a line with no ability to use CPS or quick codes like 1899. These are only on BT lines.

I had a BT line (light users £4 a month), Bulldog line (£17.66 per month inc 8meg ADSL), NTL line (£5 per month).

The talk talk offer is good if you are under the download limit.

I decided to go for the BE offer 22meg ADSL 2+ including a free modem with VOIP (£20 a month they gave me the old price not £24). I cancelled my bulldog line, and NTL and now just have one BT line (£11 you cannot get ADSL on Light user they have updated their systems!). With the VOIP modem and SIPGATE I can have 2 addtional incoming lines, or 2 outgoing line with free calls to some places like the UK, USA etc. (as long as the offer lasts, cost 11.60 euro per 120 days. The free calls are capped at 300 per week no rollover. So the BT line is £11 per month and the ADSL is £20 more than talk talk by £10 but I can't live with the rate cap!

Even if you go with talk talk or bulldog BT will provision the line and connection to your house, all support will be via your providers.
    Seth.

With Dialaround for my peak 0845 calls. I tried to call NHS Direct today (0845 46 47) but it did not recognise the number and said it did not have enough digits.

What can I do (apart from waiting until after 6pm of course) to enable me to contact NHS Direct at peak times?

If you are on a BT line, there's no option but to pay the 1p more per minute they charge.

If you have a BT line but use a CPS provider, dial 1280 before 08454647 to 'hop back onto' BT - still 3p per minute but at least you get through.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Can't remember off the top of my head but if you use the Search This Thread function for 'Directory Enquiries' you'll get the answer. It involves using the Translate function for 118 and 192 to an 0800 number.

First add a new Carrier code of "08000192190 - Free Dir Enq" as mentioned below:-

    1. How to Add a new Carrier Code

    · Double click on next available carrier line
    · Select Carrier Code from the drop down menu
    · Click on OK

Now, add "118*1*9 - 118 DQ Trans" and "192 - 192 Translation" routing codes (both should have the 'T' Translate attribute) as indicated below:-

    2. How to Add a new Routing Code

    · Double click on next available (empty) Routing line
    · Select Routing Code from the drop down menu
    · Select for Day, Night & Weekend, the "08000192190 - Free Dir Enq" carrier (specified in 1)
    · Click on OK

Once this is done and you have dialled home then any call beginning 118 or 192 (the old DQ service) will instead dial the freephone DQ service. If you do wish to use a specific DQ service then you will have to dial your override code (normally 121) and then the DQ service you require.
