Re the £15 (less discount of course!) saving....IF (and a very big "if" in most households!) all users remember to predial manually 1899 18866 etc etc - then there is no saving at all. What you are really paying for is convenience - especially as my dialling list seems to be getting longer and longer.....18866...1899....free directory enquiry calls.....4p mobile calls (day/evening)...various settings for 0845/0870....etc etc!
Although there has been some recent debate above re server going down, difficulty force dialling (and I have been caught by this too), I think you need to keep this in perspective and ask yourself how often do you need to change your settings? I've had my dialler for about 6 months and have only changed it 3 times over that period. It's not exactly something you need to do every day!!0 -
ok i got this working now
2 questions:
1) - I am on ntl and they automatically withhold our number, of course dialing through 1899 now this will not happen, can i just put the 147 infront of the number to withhold now or is that just with bt.
2) - I thought i read that the V4 (DSD4) had a power socket, so that you can plug it in to the mains? mine does not have one?0 -

That may be so, but I have just finished decorating the hallway and want to force dial home. It is down yet again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Ok agreed that you do not need to dial home that often, but I have wanted to do so 4 times in 4 weeks, due to redecorating and tweaking with my settings etc.
Twice I have been caught with being unable to dial home including this afternoon Grrrrrrr. Last week, I could not even get to the server.
Statistically, in my case the service has been unavailable about 80% of the time. This is clearly unacceptable.
On a slightly different note, however, the reason why I wanted to dial home this afternoon is to reset the clock after having to unplug it for a couple of minutes. I get the impression, though, that the clock is still the right time. I read somewhere that the dialler resets the clock to 0001 hours Monday morning, but my dialler still seems to be holding its weekend settings.0 -

Cheers bbb_uk, what i meant to say was that the actual dialer does not have a power socket on it! is the poer trasfered thtough the phone socket it self then?0

Yes, the power it needs to keep track of the time and your routing info is taken from the voltage of the line (normally around 50v DC). Some (not many though) NTL lines have been known to have a really low voltage and therefore cause probs with the dialler or caller display (CLI).0

for some reason using certain phones on my NTL line meant the V4 dialler was failing to passthrough the number quite often. I rang Orchid and they straightaway sent out the powered version of the V4 the next day along with a postage paid envelope to return my unpowered V4 and just had to pay the 'excess' for the powered version. Can't thank them enough, all up and running finenow0

Sorry I'm full of questions today.
I am on Telewest and have just downgraded my package and have now signed up for 1899. I don't want to have to faff around remebering to dial the special number. I was looking at these dialer things. Which option do I need to go for V2 or V4? Like I say all I have is telewest and this new 1899 number. My other question is with a Dialer how do I go about ringing Telewest? At the mo all I do is dial 150 from the phone and it goes straight through.
Sorry if these questions have already been asked. I'm not up to trawling through all the pages.
Thank you in advance.0 -

If you are only planning on having 1899 and are going to route your local, national and mobile calls through 1899 at all times then the V2 router may be sufficient for your needs. If you think you will want to start adding other override providers such as 18866 or want to route different calls to different providers at different times I would suggest the V4. However, as you are on a Telewest line, I would imagine 1899 is probably the best deal you can get at the moment so a V2 router should suffice.
Don't worry about calls to 150. The dialler will be configured to let these calls go through as normal.0 -

I cannot vouch for the V2, But the V4 is programmed with some software on your PC then sent to a server. You then dial a special code to your phone and this calls the server and downloads your settings.
You program up the dialler to firstly ignore specific numbers (ie they go through telewest) then you set specific times (check telewests tarif) then program routing to go to specific Least Cost Routing codes.
This is my programming for Telewest and 1899
no time to post, er can I email you it?
