Did you inspect the car PRIOR to making a bid? When you bid on an item on Ebay, you are bidding to win the item, not just merely to view it once the auction is complete, with the option to pay once you've inspected it. I'm constantly surprised by people who are prepared to commit to buy a car on Ebay without going to see the car first.

True, although if the car looks rubbish in the flesh I would rather have an ebay neg than buy it..

Using this specific example, it is an ex police car, 8 years old, 115,000 miles on the clock and a recent purchase by the ebay seller. It was also £1000. With all that in mind the £80 offer is probably fair.

The seller has no record of any other cars being sold on Bay, so if he's running a car sales business on the sly then he's either doing it off eBay or under another ID.
There is no evidence presented so far to show that he is a dealer. If so, this is a private sale and the OP has little comeback except what she can negotiate herself.
Given what has been found in a brief inspection, it's very likely that the car has other faults too and is unroadworthy and unsafe.

Sellers can't neg buyers now so no worries there. Keep up at the back;)

Too many people quote "if you bid you have bought it"
If it's not as decribed or not roadworthy, they're not getting my money, and negative feedback as well.
I never go to see the car first if I buy.
If it's as decribed, and after a test drive all appears ok, I'll pay the full amount.
If not I have every intention of walking away.
Having said that, so far every transcation has been good, and I've sold a car as well, with no problems.

The only good thing about this transaction though is the apparently unconditional offer of the refund in the listing, as it should be part of the contract, get advice if this will stand up in court, then take full advantage of it.
Do a screen print to keep a hard copy safe as well.

    Ditto above.

Why do people think if they won a car auction on ebay they have to buy it

Like mike72, I will walk away if the car is not as described, in fact I almost done it a few years ago having test drove and inspect a bmw 318is I won on ebay. I found a part need repairing and ask for £50 deduction from seller, at first seller refused, until he realised I was serious about not buying and returning from milton keynes to london.

I have bought 2 cars from ebay and have never travel to see the car until i won the auction. When the car are far away from your area it really isn't convenient to see it first.

OP - It's upto you which course of action you want to take. If it was me I would send him a polite but strongly worded mail requesting for more money back or a full refund.

It really doesn't matter what price the seller bought and sold it for. The seller can buy it for £500 and sell it for £10k or vice versa. What matter is the description.

Whether £80 is fair or not is a matter of opinion. If the OP thinks it fair then she can accept, if not she can ask for more or pursue the matter further.

On the other hand the expectations of a £1000 car would be lower than a £100,000 car (excluding classics lol)
