Firstly I may have to apologise if I'm using the wrong thread.

I have a friend in Spain whose number begins 0844. Is is cheaper to dial through BT, 1899 or 18185.

    Thanks for any responses.

0844 is not a Spanish area code so it appears your friend has set up an 0844 number in the UK which automatically diverts callers to his/her Spanish number.

As such, using BT to call will be cheapest. The exact cost depends on the 5th 6th and 7th digits (check HERE for the exact per minute cost - it'll be anything up to 5p).

However, if you knew his/her real Spanish landline number, you could call it for ½p/minute or less from a BT landline (see the MSE International Callchecker).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • The chances are is that the 0844 number he has set up is going to be dearer to call then one of the 0844 access numbers in the Intl Call Checker.

Suppliers usually use 3/4p a min 0844 numbers. See: http://www.ukxpat.com/countries_and_call_rates_letter.asp?letter=S

Only real advantage of the direct access is if they are engaged, because you dont pay until you get through unlike 0844 gateway numbers, where you start paying when you hit announcement.

If you have O2 contract with inclusive minutes you can use them to call 0844/0870 numbers.

You're reading the BT table wrong.

0844 734 xxxx numbers are charged by BT at g11 rate - 4p/minute incl. VAT at all times.

You can dial 0844 numbers from Talk Talk they usually charge same as BT,but if you have moved your line rental to them the chances are that they will/have bar you access to the likes of 1899/18185.You could however probaly use these companies Freephone 0808 access numbers but the rates can vary compared to the normal indirect access ones.
