I've never had any problems with connection or audibility using https://www.18185.co.uk (4p connection and ½p/minute).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I apologise if this has been posted before, but is it not cheaper to use the international calling cards that seem to be available everywhere in London? £3.50 gives about 110 minutes to Australia, that works out at about 3p a min and its to an 0800 number!

Probably only from a callbox. From landlines and mobiles with spare minutes there are cheaper options.

Er, no. That's SIX TIMES more expensive that the ½p/minute one of the dial-through providers listed on the MSE International Callchecker charges (although that price is only guaranteed from a BT residential landline).

  • International Phone Checker is not providing any useful numbers for India. Have tried over several days and each time the number either does not connect or I get a message saying "due to capacity problems....."

    What? Even 18185 (4p/minute)?

Sorry I should have said that I have only tried the top 4 or so Simply Dial Numbers (Green) from the list.
  • 18185 is no 3 in the list so I would say it is a "useful number"

    Hi

I have found calling cards can be okay for long calls ( I used them before I discovered MSE or likes of 1899) but for short calls you may get scammed.Connection charges per call, maintanence charges, daily charges ,short life span ,eg 30 days from first use soon add up and your per minute charges is a lot higher than quoted price.
Also high per minute pay phone surcharges ,on most cards.

Plus ,of course ,MSE callchecker is often cheaper anyway.

    Regards

    Alan
