On the topic of 0844, are there any plans to put them in the UK callchecker? Many of the bypass operators don't seem to support them?
Have you not noticed that 0844 numbers do appear in the CallCheckers - as the gateway numbers used by various providers to give cheap rates for calls to other numbers!
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Hi guys.

If i were to switch my landline from BT to o2 or TalkTalk landline, could i use BT 1280 over ride to benefit from low cost international numbers?

Or will i still be charged by both providers (BT and one of the others)?

    Thanks

The 1280 prefix can only be used if you pay line rental to BT and have a CPS* calls provider.

Subject to those 2 criteria, the 1280 prefix can be used to override the default routing of your calls via the CPS calls provider for an individual call. It's use has the effect of sending that call via BT.

Hence, if you switch your landline to any provider other than BT, 1280 will do nothing.

    * N.B. This does not apply to those former CPS calls providers which, like Talk Talk and Sky Talk, now use BT Wholesale's WCLI to carry their calls

With o2, if you use an internal call checker number, do o2 just charge their standard connection fee e.g. 9p and then add whatever the charge is for the international number e.g. Russia 2p per minute. (whereas BT would only charge the 2p per minute and not the connection fee) ?? (Total for 5 minute call =9p connection plus 2p x 5minutes?)

Or do o2 add on a charge for every minute that you are using the international number aswell? (Total for 5 minute call = 9p connection plus 2p x 5minutes, plus additional charge per minute?)

    Hope that makes sense Thanks

I think you misunderstand. All providers charge their standard 'connection' fee for calling the 0843/4, 0871/2/3 and 09 numbers which appear on the CallCheckers (BT charges 10.9p at the moment but 11½p from 4-1-2011) plus their own per minute rate for the particular number range used (the CallCheckers show BT's rates).

    So, a 9 minute 5 second call to Russia using 0844calls' 0844 462 3838 number from a BT residential landline would currently cost 10.9p plus 10 x 2p = a total of 30.9p.

I use 0844 8616262 and get the cheapest call to Switzerland.
1d. per minute. But, Talktalk charge me 12p (g8) connection fee even if I do not get through .Am now looking at 18866.co.uk which will not connect with Talktalk and I pay by direct debit for my calls.
Seem to be quite cheap and there is only a 5p connection fee only if you get through.

Talk Talk bar access to indirect codes.

You could use sister company 18185 via their freephone access number though.
