There are currently 3 providers offering 1p/minute rates to Costa Rica showing in the MSE International Callchecker. Those gateway providers cannot just change what callers are charged on those numbers - the 1p/minute rate is fixed (although calls providers - like Virgin Media - can charge what they like).

To increase the cost to 2p/minute, the gateway provider would have to change to a different 0844 number specified as a 2p/minute one.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.
  • Whats the cheapest way that I can ring (UK Vodafone PAYG) to france?
  • If I use this company to phone a mobile in Spain will I have to pay a connection charge to BT and if so how much? Are there any cheaper ways of keeping in contact other than Skype? What is the cheapest way to text a Spanish mobile?
    Thanks
  • Does anyone know if when calling a mobile using an overide number, does the mobile recieving the call recieve any charges? And would it show up on the mobile bill?
    Thanks

It depends. If the receiving (UK) mobile is on the UK, the receiving mobile pays nothing to receive your call.

OTOH, if the receiving (UK) mobile is overseas, the receiving mobile will have to pay a per-minute charge to receive your call.

Thank you. The mobile is Australian and in would be recieving the call while in Oz. So I'll warn that they will be charged too.

  • Hi.. I have been using Dialwise and similar access numbers to connect to landlines in Spain, and always had good service. Charges 0.5 p/min.
I am trying to connect to a number in Taiwan, using the recommended numbers and cannot get the system to work at all. The international number for Taiwan is 00886. This seems to make the total numbers input exceed the length allowed by the system, as the dialling is always interrupted before before the final number.
I can dial the same number direct, without any problems.
Can anyone offer a solution please ?

The Intl Callchecker is out of date - under Italy two providers are listed at 0.5p per minute yet after wasting 8p on a connection fee in both cases a recorded message says it's actually 2p per minute.

Over the course of a month all these little discrepancies add up and pretty much negate the cost of going via 18185/1899/18866 instead where you're only charged when the call is answered by the caller.

I'd recommend before dialling override numbers people go through to the provider website(s) and double-check that the rate they're advertising is still valid.

I think the trouble is the CallChecker updates each night by doing an automatic 'trawl' of the various websites and there is no human intervention doing spot checks like you suggest (no, I'm not suggesting that would be possible).

In this case, if we take the example of Dialwise, apparently one of the 0.5p gateway providers to Italy, checking their website reveals that's exactly what it shows (the 0.5p/minute 0844 200 number listed in the CallChecker).

A cynic might say that Dialwise deliberately leave the cheap number listed (and sort of active) to pull in the punters in the hope that people will just hang up and, sheep-like, dial the 2p/minute number they hear in the announcement.

However, I totally agree about the use of 1899, 18185 and 18866.
