Welcome to the MSE forums saffy 01.

I will never understand why anyone gives Talk Talk their business or why Martin continues to 'recommend' them. They repeatedly demonstrate in so many ways that they are just 21st Century rip-off merchants.

BTW, I have copied your post to another thread to try to ensure Talk Talk company representatives see it.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    To Talk Talk’s Company Representative:

I am completely appalled by the lack of morals that Talk Talk as a company have displayed and the complete lack of understanding and callousness of your response to this situation. This is Talk Talk’s mess and I ask that it be rectified at cost to yourselves and no one else and be dealt with as quickly as possible.

Saffy01. In my experience when dealing with companies and getting this sort of treatment, a good option is to write to the chief executive. In this case I believe it is Charles Dunstone, but you need to confirm this by a telephone call to their head office. Be polite and explain the circumstances of how this situation arose and you may get a result. Worth a try anyway.

Thanks for all your help. Does anyone, with all you people's expertise, know the cheapest way of calling the Uk from the US then?

Thanks jann & Stan, there is a huge discrepancy in competition between the EU phone market and North Candian phone market. But then this seems to exists with the cost of flights compared to the UK as well. Oh well, I am grateful we have the better deal here in the UK! Thanks everyone for all your help

There are literally hundreds of US-based phone cards, with variations of tariffs, billing units per second or minute or longer, and some with connection or daily or other interval maintenance fees.

Most of them have ordinary landline access numbers, but some also can be used via toll-free numbers such as 1-800, 1-888 etc, sometimes with a higher rate per minute, and certainly with a fee if used from a phonebox.

Myself, on top of a calling card I'd probably also go for one of the Betamax VoIP brands that can be used via access numbers from 30 or 40 countries, some needing you to add your number in the account details, and some such as DialNow using account PIN entry like some of the phone cards do.

There are also some callthrough accounts available via pre-select codes that start with 1010... Some of these don't operate throughout the whole country
  • The International Callchecker lists Primus Saver as the cheapest way to call to the Philippines.
    Currently it is 4p/min on 0844 7090011.
Calls to this number are answered by Planet Talk Instant and when dialling a Philippine landline they say the (Philippine) number is not recognised.

A visit to the Planet Talk Instant website gives a different number, 0844 5500011 at 5p/min. The Philippine number is also not recognised when dialling this alternative.

This has been the case for more than a month now and e-mails about this to Planet Talk Instant and the International Callchecker remain unanswered.

In short the Primus Saver number and Planet Talk Instant number are not valid for phoning Philippine landlines.
  • I have just signed up to sky talk unlimited where i get free calls to landlines in Iceland. Does anyone know of how I can get cheap calls to mobiles in Iceland - I had been using an 0844 call forwarding facility with BT. (my landline is still with BT)

Even if you have left your line rental with BT, you are now at the mercy of Sky as to the cost of calling 0844 numbers.

They may charge the same as BT but Virgin Media used to do that ........

According to the MSE International Callchecker, 8p per minute via an 0844 gateway provider is the best you can hope for.

  • Thanks Heinz
8p a minute (with a 9p connection fee) with Best Minutes through sky talk isn't too bad - considering I used to pay over 60p a minute before I visited MoneySavingExpert.
I suppose with free calls to land lines in iceland and 8p per minute for mobiles I'm not doing too bad !!!!!
    Cheers
  • Hi. any help please. on the international call checker, it gives me 0p to call Pakistan via Auracall. But when I check the Auracall web page it sayes 8p for pakistan. Any more info wellcommed thanks.
  • My friend needs to call Spain quite often from her mobile to the other persons mobile.
Anyone offer guidance on the best way(cheapest!!) to do this.
She has VOIP if that makes a difference?:o
  • The 3 companies that are quoted as charging 1p/min to Costa Rica now appear to be charging 2p/min.
