does anyone know if any of these providers allow a conference call facility in from Canada to the UK? I need to speak with 3 colleagues who are based in different parts of Canada at the same time and I've been told it is possible for them to have a password (or something) to call in to a single number which will then transfer on to my number. Has anyone ever heard of this ?
Any help gratefully received as I am going crazy trying to respond to all questions by mobile/phone/email at the same time!!!!***************************************

Virgin prices are more expensive to the 0844 numbers. Best way to find out the cost is to go VM's website at http://allyours.virginmedia.com/html/phone/callingcosts.html and look up the call reference in the UK Non-gepgraphic numbers doc, and check out the price in the Residential Tariffs doc. A bit of a pain but the only accurate way to know how much it costs.
On another note, I have generally used the 0844 numbers but want to try a service like TopUpNow as it seems cheaper. For the country I want to call, the rate is listed at 0p/min. Does this mean that after topping up with credit from TopUpNow, the only charge taken out of that credit is the 5p connection charge and no other charge? Or is there still a minimal cost per minute that they are not listing? I know of course that there is the cost of calling their number first.0 -

It does exactly what it says on the tin. If it says 0p a minute for your destination thats what it normally charges, plus the 5p connection fee.
No need to even pay for the cost of calling their access number from your landline as its a freephone number.0 -

You would pay 5p a minute from a BT Line to use it plus connection charge. Your Canadian colleagues would pay the going rate from Canada to call the preferred access number.0 -
Could someone please advise me on the cheapest way to make calls to Canada from my BT landline and also from my mobile? I am totally confused by BT's charges for 0843 and 0844 numbers.
Would someone please explain to me in words of one syllable. Thanks

The cheapest ways to call a Canadian landline or mobile from your BT landline are shown on the MSE International CallChecker. I recommend 18185 for such calls - as I do for a number of other types of call (see the HERE link in my signature below).
The cost of calling from your mobile will depend on the network and tariff you're on. However, it will certainly be vastly more expensive than the ½p/minute you'll pay from your landline.
BT's charges for calling 'special' numbers are shown in their Specialised Numbers Price List. 0843 and 0844 numbers are charged at between ½p and 5p per minute (well, fractionally less while 15% VAT remains) depending on the 5th, 6th and 7th digits. There are numbers @ ½p, 1p, 2p, 3p, 4p and 5p per minute.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

MOBILE CALLS: We have an account with Voipstunt and dial their UK access number. Then dial the number in Canada (without pressing green/send key again). The UK part of the Call comes out of our mobile inclusive mins. Then the Canada part gets taken out of our account. For the first 120 days there is no charge and you can use 300 mins a week. After the 120 days the credit that you gave voipstunt is then used. REMEMEBR that you will be charged for the UK part of the call by your mobile company ~so if you have inclusive mins no charge from mobile company.
LAND LINE: You can also use voipstunt is a similar fashion. OR can login to voipstunt and get the computer to connect your calls. Your phone will ring and you answer it. The phone in Canada rings and you get connected. My mother in law does this in Spain as does not have inclusive mins on her land line. Think they charge €0.05 connection fee
MOBILE: IF you do not want to set up an account with voipstunt. Then look at 18185 all ready mentioned and then dial their UK access number.0 -

Hi sc0pus,
Our Call Checker specifically states that connection charges may apply, by stating:
"Important: some of these providers charge a connection fee (ie., a fixed amount per call). Also do note the prices listed are for calls from BT phones, calls from other providers can sometimes vary."
BT lists call charges on their website:
http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Call_Charges_boo/1632_d0e5.htm#1632-d0e5
Details that the 0844 200 destination has a charge band of g22
http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Call_Charges_boo/0016_d0e5.htm#0016-d0e5
Indicates that g22 relates to a cost of .489p per minute
http://www.serviceview.bt.com/list/public/current/Gen_Notes_boo/0001_d0e219.htm#0001-d0e219
Indicates a call connection charge of 8p.I look after the CallChecker and FlightChecker.

The Direct Dial section of International call Checker is giving false information to consumers.
When you search the various websites of Direct Dial providers , they all state that with BT you only have to pay the rate advertised, i.e. there is no connection charge.
However, when I received my BT bill I found that this was not so. There was an 8p connection charge.
I emailed Dialwise and queried this but they said that I should contact BT as there should be no connection charge on my bill.
I then phoned BT Customer Services and they confirmed that the 8p charge definitely applies to 0844 200 ( g22) numbers. I phoned them again an hour later just to get someone else to confirm this.
I have emailed Dialwise again with this information but they have not replied yet.
It would seem that MSE is helping to deceive the public by advertising these websites with their false information. Here is a quote from the MSE webpage:
'This access number is at a fixed tariff .....and billed via your home phone company, that's then all you pay (i.e., the call costs 2p/min). The override company then gets a cut of your phone provider's call revenue.'
and again:
'Cons: You start paying as soon as you're connected to the override provider, thus even if the person isn't in, you'll have paid for a minute's call.'
This is just not true
On a similarly misleading note, when you go to the Dialwise website they state that some providers may charge a connection fee but indicate that BT doesn't. As I stated above, I emailed Dialwise and they repeated this - that BT doesn't charge a connection fee and I should contact BT Customer Services to complain.
My next step is to contact Trading Standards and see if they can do anything, but I doubt it as the Dialwise registered offices are in Switzerland.0
