    Hi
Uk call checker says .2p in evening but talktalk list shows .49p.
    Which is correct?
    Thanks
    Michael
I assume you mean 2p/minute and 4.9p/minute respectively.

However, you obviously missed the "Always double-check prices on providers websites before calling. Prices may vary from non-BT landlines." text on the CallChecker.

In any case, the CallChecker misses the fact that 18185's freephone gateway number offers ½p/minute at all times for 0845 calls (see HERE).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Anyway, to keep "on-topic" I would suggest the International Call Checker on this site should include the Channel Islands and Isle of Man.

Most cheap calls providers charge the same for these as UK mobiles, and don't list them separately, so the Callchecker system can see no info to gather

That wouldn't solve your problem of identifying the prefixes anyway, though it is the way to save on the calls

Or anyone who needs to make a lot of such calls could switch to a mobile network which includes them
  • Hi

No Talktalk states .49p not .2p on call checker!
So wondered why call checker is getting wrong info or are they correct?

Good point, their list of tariffs shows 1.96p/minute (2p) daytime and 0.49p/minute (½p) evenings. The 0.2p/minute showing on the UK CallChecker for the 'evening' price appears to be wrong.

I'll email CallChecker Admin. for you.

Well said, some perfect examples :-
    a) 070 owners giving missed call with personal follow-up numbers
    b) mobile look-alike numbers to get charge extra
    c) 0871 & 0870 price differences
    b) 07744 gateway defunct numbers in inclusive access numbers ( this is now a thing of past )

SIMPLE, just enforce that every follow-on operator providing serice has to announce their charges before a call connection is made unless it is an ordinary landline or mobile line. That will wipe out half the conmen playing with terms and conditions and "inclusive minutes" advertisements, remaining barely legal in my view.

Well.. OFCOM give it to them...and OFCOM can't even be bothered to allocate a distinguishable range, say maybe 0741xxx IOM, 0742 Jersey etc.

Vodafone should also perhaps have inserted an annoucement that the number is not a standard UK number...

But as it stands..it is a mess...and user beware...

Sorry, I tried emailing but they keep bouncing (returning just a please read the below and, if your question's not answered there, email the same address).

I'll try a PM to another official but I'm not hopeful.

Perhaps you're slightly confusing the issue

That part of the discussion was about Guernsey Isle of Man and Jersey mobile phone numbers, which do not host either callthrough or other services you describe

But they can be called via services listed on the Callchecker, at the same rates as UK mobiles

Has anyone with a Virgin phone line used these override providers shown on Martin's callchecker? Discount Dial (0844 200 9595) and Telesavers (0844 200 7575)? Both give a recorded message confirming the half a penny per minute charge shown on the callchecker.

My last three phone bills, have had these numbers billed anywhere between 0.8p a minute, to 10p a minute (got a refund on the latter one).

Virgin are saying that they're just passing on the charges made to them by the override companies - who themselves say that Virgin ought to be charging half a p' per minute, and anything extra is added at the Virgin end.

Anyone getting these billed at other rates - including the correct one?

The CallCheckers show prices from a BT landline.

It has been reported many times before that Virgin charges extra (sometimes double) for calling 0844 numbers. The reason they do that is profit, pure and simple.

Thanks Heinz - what I resent is that Virgin claim not to be adding anything extra to the charge. I'm currently batting emails back and forth with them - a cumbersome process using their online forms, but at least I have a written record of their excuses.

When I complained to them about this in February, I got a call back from a customer rep who explained that she didn't know why the charges were being inflated - and couldn't find out either. Quality service!
